In the upcoming Spanish-language movie “Calle Malaga,” directed by Maryam Touzani, I, a follower, have the honor of sharing the screen with the esteemed Spanish actor and Pedro Almodóvar muse, Carmen Maura.
This upcoming movie, managed globally by Berlin-based Films Boutique, serves as a sequel for Touzani following “The Blue Caftan” and “Adam”. Both previous films were screened in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section and represented Morocco for the Oscars in 2020 and 2023. “The Blue Caftan” received an award at Cannes, in addition to over 60 awards globally, making it the highest-grossing Moroccan film internationally.
Film Studio “Boutique” is offering pre-sales for the movie titled “Calle Malaga,” which they showcased at the EFM. They also released a first image (shown above) featuring Maura as Maria Angeles, a 74-year-old woman from the Spanish community of Tangier who cherishes her peaceful life in the vibrant Moroccan coastal town. However, when her daughter decides to sell their home, she is unwillingly displaced. Determined to reclaim her house and belongings, which have been sold to a vintage dealer, she embarks on a journey that leads her to an unexpected rediscovery of love and sensuality.
Touzani collaborated on the screenplay alongside renowned Moroccan director and her spouse, Nabil Ayouch, who has won awards for his work in films.
At present, the movie titled “Calle Malaga” is being worked on in post-production. It’s planned to be released by either spring or summer festivals. Maura has gained recognition for her roles in two of Almodóvar’s critically acclaimed films, namely “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and “Volver.
The film is created by Amine Benjelloun at Ali ‘n Prods., Jean-Rémi Ducourtioux at Les Films du Nouveau Monde, Simon De Santiago and Fernando Bovaira at Mod Producciones (all in Morocco), as well as Sol Bondy and Fred Burle at One Two Films (Germany), and Sebastian Schelenz at Velvet Films (Belgium). Each of these production companies is responsible for the film’s creation.
The movie was financed through the backing of Grand Accord Arte (in France/Germany), Eurimages, France’s International Film Assistance, Canal+, Ciné +, as well as the French distribution company, Ad Vitam. Upon its completion, Ad Vitam will distribute it in France.
The movie titled “Calle Malaga” is set to be distributed by Caramel Films in Spain, Pandora in Germany, and Cineart in Benelux. These companies are the film’s financial backers. Additionally, the movie has received support from various institutions including Morocco’s National Film Board, Spain’s ICAA, TVE, Moviestar, Belgium’s Fédération Wallonie, tax shelter, Be TV, and Germany’s Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg.
