‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ Star Tim Roth Changed 1 Aspect of his Character During Filming

After a four-year hiatus since the series finale in 2022, the world of Peaky Blinders is returning with a new movie, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. Premiering on Netflix on March 20th, the film follows Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) as he continues to grapple with the loss of his daughter Ruby while writing a book in Nazi Germany during World War II. Set six years after the end of season six, the story sees Shelby return to Birmingham from exile and face a challenging reunion with his son, Duke, who has now taken over the Peaky Blinders gang.

Eddie Murphy will be joined by several familiar faces from the original series, including Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, and Packy Lee. The cast is also expanding with exciting new additions like Rebecca Ferguson (known for Dune) and Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin). Tim Roth, famous for Pulp Fiction, will also be appearing after some changes were made to his character.

While talking to MovieWeb about his role in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, Tim Roth explained how his character, Beckett, developed. He revealed that Beckett was initially conceived as an upper-class character, but Roth suggested changing him to be working class instead.

I thought the character was originally written as someone upper class, and I suggested we change him to be working class, maybe even a schoolteacher type. It felt important because people who end up in politics often seem ordinary – they blend in and speak like everyone else. I wanted to explore what would happen if someone from a completely different background than the Peaky Blinders gang could still connect with them. It wasn’t about rewriting lines; it was simply about changing his social class, and that’s what we ended up doing.

I recently learned a fascinating bit about the actor, and it really shed light on his performance in Peaky Blinders. He shared that his father actually ran away to fight with the American forces in World War II – and the surprising reason was that wartime felt safer than his upbringing! He told me he consciously drew on that complex family history and his father’s experience when developing his character, and honestly, you can feel that depth in the performance. It adds a whole new layer of understanding to everything he does on screen.

My father served in the Air Force during World War II, stationed in Britain. Our family also has a history of working in English factories – he originally came to England to do that. When the war started, he actually sought it out, believing it offered more security than his childhood. He did survive the war, but it deeply affected him, unlike the recovery seen with Tommy. Back then, they didn’t understand or recognize trauma like PTSD; people were just expected to carry on.

Tim Roth is expected to deliver a powerful performance as the villain in the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, joining a cast of well-known actors. He’ll play a British man with fascist leanings who enters the world of Duke Shelby, and Roth intends to portray him as calculating and controlled rather than wildly aggressive. He believes this subtle approach will make the character even more frightening.

As a huge fan, I’m really invested in the Shelby family drama, especially with Tommy and Duke. I think Roth is going to be a major player in how everything unfolds, considering his role in the war and the bigger picture. Seeing how angry Duke is with everything, and Beckett trying to get him on his side, it feels like we’re building towards a seriously intense and dramatic conclusion to this whole saga. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!
