Peak’s The Roots update is out now. Here’s how it works and what to expect

A new update for Peak, called The Roots, is now available! This fun co-op game is still considered one of the best ways to play with friends. The update is free and adds a sixth unique area to explore. Previously, players had to travel through four areas to reach the top. When The Mesa area was first released, it was available for a week before switching with the existing Alpine area each day. The Roots will now take the place of The Tropics until November 17th, after which both areas will appear randomly. So, what’s new in The Roots?

Peak’s newest biome, The Roots, is available now. Watch out for spiders and zombies

The teams at Aggro Crab and Landfall Games recently posted an update on Steam detailing the new “Roots” content for Peak. They also released a short, funny video giving players a preview. The Roots is a dark pine forest environment filled with mushrooms – some of which you can bounce on! Tall, vine-covered trees with platforms offer new ways to explore, but the forest also hides some dangerous secrets.

So, you saw the trailer last week? That spider is seriously scary! Basically, if you wander under one in The Roots, it’ll trap you in webbing and hoist you up into the trees. That could mean getting split up from your team, or even worse, taking a nasty fall. Good news for anyone who’s creeped out by spiders though – they’ve added a ‘bug-phobia’ mode, which a lot of games with spiders have these days.

The game also seems to have plenty of edible mushrooms, though figuring out which ones are safe is a challenge. A strange element shown in the trailer – and one players might be able to uncover by experimenting with mushrooms – is how characters transform into zombie-like creatures covered in fungi, similar to those in The Last of Us. It’s truly disturbing to see a friend’s lifeless eyes suddenly fix on you as mushrooms sprout from their skin.

The upcoming Roots update for Peak will add several new items, including those unique to the new area, and completely revamp how cooking works. The developers are even encouraging players to experiment with fire! There are also plenty of secrets to uncover as you explore. To mark the occasion, Peak is currently 38% off until November 19th, bringing the price down to under $5. Enjoy the climb!
