James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently clarified the role of the Checkmate organization as seen in the finale of *Peacemaker* Season 2. The season revisited the 11th Street Kids – led by John Cena’s Christopher Smith – after their success against the Butterflies in Season 1. However, things had changed; the season started with the team members feeling lost and without a clear purpose following Amanda Waller’s removal from power.
The season finale of *Peacemaker* resolved the situation with the 11th Street Kids by having them use Vigilante’s money to form a new group called Checkmate. James Gunn has hinted that Checkmate will be significant in the upcoming DC Universe, and its connections to the DC Comics source material suggest it will have a major role.
Peacemaker Season 2 Finale’s Checkmate Reveal Explained by Director James Gunn

So, after the finale of *Peacemaker* Season 2, I finally got some clarity on that big Checkmate reveal, thanks to a featurette after the episode. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed what many of us suspected: the 11th Street Kids *are* Checkmate, though the team has a couple more members than we originally saw. It’s a neat little connection that really ties everything together, and Gunn laid it out pretty plainly for us.
The scene then cuts to a really joyful montage of the group using all of Vigilante’s money to start a new project, set to a performance by Foxy Shazam on a party boat. This leads to the formation of Checkmate. For comic book fans, Checkmate is a well-known organization, famously associated with Sasha Bordeaux. Now, within the DC Universe, it’s revealed that the 11th Street Kids are essentially Checkmate, though with a few additional members, including people who have undergone changes we’ve already seen.

The team now includes Sasha Bordeaux (a character first appearing in DC Comics’ Checkmate), Langston Fleury, and Judomaster. James Gunn explained that Checkmate’s primary objective is simply “making the world better.”
That was Sasha Bordeaux, Langston Fleury, Tim Meadows’ character, and Judomaster – who teamed up with Adebayo after they met on Earth Two. We see Checkmate working to improve the world, and above them, Eagly, who was previously hiding, is now flying joyfully in the sky.
