As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the silver screen world, I find Paul Walter Hauser‘s approach to film criticism truly refreshing. His honesty and objectivity, even when it comes to his own work, are commendable. It’s not every day you see an actor giving a 3.5 rating to a movie he starred in as the title character!
Paul Walter Hauser is an active Letterboxd user — sometimes even critiquing his own movies.
On Wednesday evening, the actor expressed his thoughts about a post on X, which stated, “Paul Walter Hauser, who essentially portrays Richard Jewell in the film, received a 3.5 rating from him on Letterboxd is one of the funniest discoveries I’ve made on that platform.
Hauser responded: “If I rate The Shawshank Redemption and Schindler’s List as a full five stars, but Richard Jewell as not a masterpiece or true classic, what’s the issue with providing an honest evaluation? A 3.5 out of 5 isn’t dismissive. It’s simply reflecting the truth. The film is good and definitely worth watching.
In 2019, Hauser played Richard Jewell, the man who discovered a bomb during the Atlanta Summer Olympics in 1996 and alerted authorities. However, he was later falsely accused of placing the explosives himself. Peter Debruge, the main film critic at EbMaster, praised Eastwood’s decision to cast a relatively inexperienced actor for this role, stating that it allowed Hauser to excel in the part, which Jonah Hill initially intended to play.
Hauser elaborated on “Richard Jewell” during X, noting that he adores the film and cherishes numerous fond recollections associated with it. Rockwell felt like a beloved uncle to him, while Hamm was more like an older brother. He also met his spouse during filming in Atlanta. Sebastian Stan graciously permitted him to stay at his place without charge. It was a period filled with magical moments for him. Moreover, the movie is worth watching.
Richard Jewell isn’t the only movie Hauser has critically appraised on Letterboxd. He gave 2.5 stars to “The Instigators” from 2024 where he has a minor role, 4 stars to Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”, 3.5 to Dreamworks’ “Orion and the Dark”, 3 stars to Bill Burr’s “Old Dads”, 4 stars to the yet-to-be-released “Americana” starring Sydney Sweeney, 2.5 stars to “Queenpins”, and a high rating of 4.5 to “Cruella.
