I’ve been expressing my enthusiasm for using ChatGPT as a tool to brainstorm movie ideas. Recently, I shared on Facebook how I asked this AI platform to create plotlines for films from renowned directors, such as myself, and I was genuinely amazed by the outcomes it produced.
Schrader expressed astonishment, stating, ‘I’m flabbergasted!’ He inquired about ideas for a film featuring Paul Schrader, then proceeded to request suggestions for films by Paul Thomas Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Harmony Korine, Ingmar Bergman, Rossellini, Lang, Scorsese, Murnau, Capra, Ford, Spielberg, Lynch. To his surprise, chatGPT swiftly provided unique and well-developed ideas for each director in a matter of seconds. This raises the question: Why do writers spend months laboriously searching for good ideas when AI can offer one so quickly?
The post sparked a lot of criticism from Schrader’s fans, with comments such as “Are you alright, Paul?”, “I believe Paul’s account might have been hacked” and “Come on, Paul… Please stop endorsing that nonsense.
Recently, Schrader’s Facebook posts have been centered around AI. At present, the 78-year-old filmmaker shared that he sent a script he penned some time ago to ChatGPT and requested enhancements. The next day, he stated that it offered suggestions in just five seconds, which were as good or even better than any feedback he’s ever received from a movie executive. Earlier, he also acknowledged his realization that AI might be more intelligent than himself.
He expressed that he comes up with superior concepts and finds more streamlined methods for their implementation,” he penned down. “This situation is reminiscent of what Kasparov experienced in 1997, when he recognized that Deep Blue would defeat him at chess.
In his newest movie titled “Oh, Canada,” director Paul Schrader features Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi. This film revolves around a filmmaker nearing the end of his life, who reminisces about his career and life during a final interview. At the Cannes Film Festival where “Oh, Canada” was debuted, Schrader announced that his next project will be a noir film centered on the theme of sexual fixation, called “Non Compos Mentis.
“It’s about the stupid things men do for love,” he said.
