Even though Conan O’Brien has retired from late-night TV, Paul Rudd is still playfully teasing him with a joke that’s been going on for years.
Paul Rudd recently appeared on Conan O’Brien’s podcast and continued a joke he’s been playing on the host for over twenty years. Starting in 2004, Rudd has repeatedly told Conan he’s there to promote something new, but instead plays the same strange clip from the 1988 movie Mac and Me.
Paul Rudd recently appeared on Conan O’Brien‘s podcast to talk about his new comedy film, Anaconda, which also features Jack Black. The movie follows two friends who decide to remake the classic Anaconda film. Rudd shared that he had a clip from the movie to show O’Brien, but playfully surprised him by playing a clip from Mac and Me instead, which instantly made the host laugh.
Look, I get why the host said the bit is getting a little stale after all these years – it’s been over two decades! He’s right, now we all pretty much know what’s coming the second Paul mentions a clip. And honestly, Paul admitted it himself! He said he doesn’t even try to hide that it’s going to be Mac and Me anymore. He was totally upfront about it, saying he barely put any thought into it this time. It’s become a tradition, sure, but the surprise is definitely gone, and they both seem okay with that!
Even though the joke was already pretty clear, Rudd hinted he was planning a surprise addition to the prank. He didn’t want to explain it on the air, as that would ruin the effect, but he promised to catch O’Brien off guard if he ever tried to change things up. He even jokingly called it the “greatest” prank ever.
I have an idea for how we could accomplish this, but I’m not sharing the details just yet. It could be something really significant, and I’m hopeful we’ll be able to try it out eventually. I’m confident I can work out the best approach.
Rudd once explained he created the prank because he’s always been uneasy about self-promotion. It was a way to avoid showing previews of his films while also playfully teasing O’Brien.
The joke started back in 2004 while Paul Rudd was on Friends promoting the show’s finale. During an appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Rudd playfully tricked the audience by claiming he had a clip from the last episode. Instead of Friends, he showed them a scene from a different, cult-favorite sci-fi movie.
