Paul Mescal on Meeting King Charles, ‘Glicked’ Double Features and Drunk Karaoke With the ‘Gladiator II’ Cast

As a seasoned cinephile who’s spent countless hours in the dimly lit sanctuaries of movie theaters, I can wholeheartedly endorse Paul Mescal’s dual-feature suggestion of “Gladiator II” and “Wicked”. The contrast between these two films, each offering its unique brand of cinematic grandeur, makes for an engaging and enriching experience.

Paul Mescal expresses his hope that “Glicked” will become the next “Barbenheimer,” encouraging cinema-goers to enjoy a two-part viewing experience, consisting of “Gladiator II” followed by “Wicked.

In my view, they truly shine together due to their distinct qualities,” I shared during the premiere of “Gladiator II” in Los Angeles on Monday evening. “For cinephiles like myself, it’s essential to embrace this unique blend. Instead of delaying, head to your local cinema to witness these masterpieces. We find ourselves at a pivotal moment for cinematic art; the future of theater films is at stake. If you cherish the magic of movies, don’t miss out – experience both films in all their glory.

Fred Hechinger, who portrays Emperor Caracalla in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel, mentioned that he intends to have a “Glicked” day at the theater. In his words, “I’m a big fan of ‘Wicked,’ and I can’t wait to perform ‘Defying Gravity.’

Regarding their discussions about singing, it’s worth noting that Mescal and Hechinger mentioned visiting a karaoke bar during the promotion of “Gladiator II” in Japan as well.

During interviews for the movie ‘Aftersun,’ actor Mescal expressed his dislike for karaoke, saying ‘I really don’t like karaoke.’ However, he found himself participating in it despite his initial reservations and ended up enjoying the experience.

What song did he belt out? “I did ‘The Climb,’” he responded.

Instead of asking if he reached Miley Cyrus’ pitch level, you could rephrase it as: “Did he sing like Miley Cyrus? No, I was drunk, but it was fantastic,” Mescal replied with a chuckle. “It’s not about hitting those notes — it’s about the vibe.

He, too, took part in that event,” Hechinger remarked about his participation in “The Climb” performance. “I believe karaoke is designed for those who aren’t naturally gifted vocalists. I think it’s awkward for someone with a strong voice to do karaoke because it might be seen as overpowering.

The press tour for “Gladiator II” featured a regal premiere in London, graced by King Charles III. Paul Mescal expressed surprise at the encounter with the British monarch, stating, “It wasn’t something I ever anticipated or planned, being Irish and all.” He continued, “However, it was an extraordinary experience for Ridley [Scott], knowing how much importance he places on such events. Seeing his film honored in this context was truly unique and special.

Mescal struggled to remember the exact words spoken by King Charles. “His words seemed blurred to me, as my mind was whirling at the time, causing me to merely nod and smile in response.
