Patrick Wilson, Matthew Modine, Gracie Lawrence Join Cast of Signe Baumane’s Latvian Animated Feature ‘Karmic Knot’

The production company responsible for the critically acclaimed “Annecy Jury Distinction” winner, “My Love Affair with Marriage,” by Latvian director Signe Baumane, has revealed some essential cast information for her upcoming project titled “Karmic Knot.

Under the guidance of filmmaker Baumane, whose past projects “Rocks In My Pockets” and “My Love Affair With Marriage” have received widespread recognition, the movie “Karmic Knot” unfolds. This narrative revolves around a close-knit family in Soviet-occupied Latvia, spanning from the 1970s to the early 1990s. As the Soviet Union disintegrates, they aim to rebuild their world, maintaining an even more isolated existence than before, while one member nurtures dreams that could transform everything.

Offering a captivating cinematic journey that seamlessly combines the glitz of Hollywood with the sparkle of Broadway, this film features an elite cast led by Patrick Wilson, who has earned Tony Award nominations and is best known for his roles in “The Conjuring” movie franchise and “Insidious.” In this production, Wilson lends his voice to Ansis, a dedicated civil engineer striving to safeguard his family from the tumult of Soviet-occupied Latvia.

Actress Dagmara Dominczyk, known for her roles in “Succession” and “The Lost Daughter,” takes on the character of Vizma, a strong wife and mother who bravely navigates through the turbulent seas of deceit. Meanwhile, Gracie Lawrence, the lead vocalist of the band Lawrence and Broadway newcomer, will be heard as Ragne, the youngest family member in the upcoming Bobby Darin musical “Just in Time” this spring.

Emma Kenney, well-known for her roles in “The Conners” and “Shameless,” lends her understanding of intricate family relationships to the character of Zinta, a determined older daughter who stands up against a repressive regime. Stephen Lang, acclaimed for his powerful performances in “Avatar” and “Don’t Breathe,” provides the voice for Victors, Vizma’s father, whose beliefs leave deep scars on his offspring.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight Matthew Modine, famed for his powerful performances in “Full Metal Jacket” and “Stranger Things.” In our production, he lends his voice to Imants, Ansis’ elder sibling, whose 10,000 ruble loan kick-starts the narrative. The film is further enriched by thirty-eight esteemed New York and Latvian stage actors gracing us with their presence in supporting roles, bolstering both the depth and authenticity of our project.

Lang, Domincyzk, Kenny, and Modine have all contributed their voices to Baumane’s “My Love Affair with Marriage” in the past.

As I sat down to watch “Karmic Knot”, I was immediately drawn in by the mesmerizing blend of established stars and promising newcomers gracing the screen. This movie is destined to grip viewers with its thought-provoking narrative and top-tier acting. What sets it apart is its deeply moving portrayal of family, fortitude, and the indomitable human spirit, all unfolding against a turbulent historical landscape.

Attention will undoubtedly be focused on the project due to Baumane’s remarkable past achievements and the recent triumph of another Latvian feature film, “Flow,” which has won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature and been nominated for both Best Animated Feature and International Feature at this year’s Oscars.
