As a seasoned Path of Exile player with years of experience under my belt, I must say that the Sorceress is one of the most enchanting classes to play. Her icy powers and mystical abilities make her stand out among the other characters.
In the pre-release version of Path of Exile 2, the Sorceress is among the six character classes players can choose from. Despite not being the most powerful initially, the Sorceress can be transformed into an effective boss-slayer with the right abilities and gameplay approach. Here, we’ve compiled a list of recommended Skill and Support Gems, Passives, Ascendancy options, along with a brief description of the class for your convenience. Enjoy!
Sorceress Overview in Path of Exile 2
From the perspective of a Sorceress, I get to choose among diverse weapons that open up a plethora of distinct spells at my disposal. These spells can be easily assigned without investing an Uncut Skill Gem on them. As a Sorceress, I’m equipped with wands, staffs, and sceptres. Wands and staffs generally provide me with an elemental spell to cast, whereas the sceptres often bestow upon me the power to summon minions during combat. Interestingly, my choice of staff significantly influences the kind of build I create, as the associated spell tied to my gear plays a crucial role in shaping my character’s unique abilities.
As a sorceress, you possess the ability to inflict damage of three elemental types: frost, lightning, and fire. Simultaneously, you can employ minions and spells causing elemental damage, but it’s often beneficial to align your main weapon’s spell with your other Skill Gems. Nevertheless, there are certain Spirit Gems for the sorceress that involve minions too, like Raging Spirits. This Spirit Gem releases three fire skulls, which attack enemies on your behalf.
Typically, the Sorceress class primarily focuses on Intelligence, yet it’s beneficial to allocate some points into Dexterity as well. A high Intelligence is crucial for most of your equipment, but investing in Dexterity can enhance the precision of your spells and enable you to wear certain items of gear.
Discussing equipment, your Sorceress will probably be equipped with lighter armors that enhance Intelligence, provide additional mana, and amplify the kind of elemental damage you opt for. The lighter armor style implies the Sorceress is more of an offensive powerhouse but may lack in defensive capabilities, often referred to as a “glass cannon.” However, if you find yourself taking too much damage, feel free to equip heavier armors or invest in the Strength attribute. This build should address those issues effectively.
Best Sorceress Skills in Path of Exile 2
Generally speaking, an effective Sorceress build primarily focuses on inflicting frost damage to handle both enemies and bosses. Although lightning and fire abilities can complement frost damage, you’ll predominantly lean on your freezing spells to vanquish adversaries. The skills you select will be positioned alongside your preferred staff, which is the Gelid Staff. This staff provides you with the Freezing Shards spell, a perfect match for all the other frost abilities you’ll be employing.
At the initial stages of playing as a Sorceress, you may not have many frost abilities at your disposal. The most effective choice for close-range damage would be Ice Nova. Yet, as your character advances, especially when reaching Level 9 Skill Gems, you’ll begin to accumulate a powerful collection of frost spells to employ.
One ability you might find useful, particularly during the early stages of the game, is Ember Fusillade. This is a fire-based spell that allows you to eliminate large groups of enemies simultaneously and inflict substantial damage on bosses. It may not align perfectly with the frost Sorceress build, but it’s a skill you’ll want to employ before you unlock your more effective frost skills.
Below, you can see what skills we recommend for the Sorceress:
- Flame Wall
- Ice Nova
- Ember Fusillade
- Frostbolt
- Cold Snap
- Frost Wall
- Flameblast
In my gaming experience, I’ve got a nice blend of fire and frost spells at hand. Early in the game, fire magic seems to pack a bit more punch compared to the frost skills I can use. Fire Wall and Ember Barrage are fantastic for dishing out damage to large groups, while Ice Nova comes in handy when I’m up against enemies who like to get too close for comfort.
At the teen stages of your Sorceress character, you’ll gradually unveil more powerful frost abilities such as Frostbolt, Cold Snap, and Frost Wall. These abilities will guide you towards completing Act 3 on normal mode in Path of Exile 2. As you progress through the challenging Cruel difficulty levels, you’ll acquire Flameblast – a potent fire skill that should be used sparingly to avoid depleting your mana too rapidly.
Best Sorceress Support and Spirit Gems
As a devoted fan, I can’t wait to equip my arsenal with the right Support Gems to boost their abilities, and hunt for those precious Spirit Gems to complement them, making each one even more powerful!
Here are some Support Gems we recommend for a few skills, as well as the best Spirit Gems to use:
Support Gems
- Spell Cascade (Flame/Frost Wall)
- Ignition (Ember Fusillade)
- Scattershot (Frostbolt)
- Glaciation (Frostbolt)
- Magnified Effect (Flame Wall)
- Icicle (Frost Wall)
- Spell Echo (Cast on Freeze)
Spirit Gems
- Cast on Freeze
- Raging Spirits
- Blink
Best Sorceress Passive Skills
As a Sorceress, you have several options for developing your Passive Ability skill tree. You could opt for the “glass cannon” approach, focusing on offensive stats to enhance your ability to freeze enemies or boost your attack power. However, if you find yourself getting defeated too frequently, it might be more prudent to select defensive bonuses that increase your evasion rating, armor, and energy shield regeneration instead.
Here are some Passive Abilities we suggest for the Sorceress:
- Path of Winter
- Climate Change
- Echoing Frost
- Raw Power
- Open Mind
- Exploit the Elements
- Shattering
Best Sorceress Ascendancy
Ultimately, once you’ve advanced your Sorceress character sufficiently in Path of Exile 2, you’ll be able to select an Ascendancy for it. Your choices will be between the Chronomancer and the Stormweaver.
Instead of opting for Stormweaver, we’ve chosen the Ascendancy as Chronomancer. Though Stormweaver offers stronger offensive capabilities, our goal is to provide you with additional defensive support to enhance your survivability during battles. The Chronomancer Ascendancy comes equipped with a buff called “Time Freeze,” enabling you to momentarily halt time and escape potentially dangerous situations more easily.
If you prefer a focus on attacking and causing damage, Stormweaver is the character for you. With skills like Heart of the Storm, Arcane Surge, and Elemental Storm at your disposal, you’ll have various ways to dish out damage.
That does it for our Sorceress build in Path of Exile 2. If you’re looking to run another class, we recommend the Monk, which has a spectacular and balanced build.
