Paramount has announced its plans for DC Studios after it’s set to buy Warner Bros. Discovery. For months, Hollywood has been watching the bidding war for the studio, with both Netflix and Paramount competing for ownership. Ultimately, Netflix withdrew its offer, leaving Paramount as the winning bidder. This means that Warner Bros. Discovery, including DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, will be acquired by Paramount.
Whenever two big companies consider merging, people naturally wonder what will happen afterward. When Disney bought 20th Century Fox, it led to job losses, organizational changes, and the cancellation of several projects, even some from Marvel. There’s been worry that a similar situation could occur if Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merged, but so far, that doesn’t appear to be happening.
According to a Bloomberg report from last October, Paramount intends to preserve most of Warner Bros. Discovery’s structure if the merger goes through. Paramount CEO David Ellison reportedly wants to maintain the existing creative teams at both studios, while streamlining the marketing and distribution departments to avoid duplication.
As a movie fan, I’m relieved to hear that Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery both plan to keep their creative teams separate. It sounds like both studios will continue making movies as they always have. This is especially great news for DC Studios – James Gunn and Peter Safran just started as co-CEOs last year and are beginning the huge task of rebooting the DC Universe, so it’s good they’ll have the space to do that.

Paramount has successfully bid for the studio, beating out Netflix in a close competition. Initially, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) had agreed to a deal with Netflix, which would have brought popular franchises like Superman, Harry Potter, and HBO under the Netflix banner. However, concerns arose about Netflix’s preference for releasing content directly to streaming, bypassing traditional movie theaters. Paramount’s win resolves this issue, as they continue to release films in theaters before they become available for streaming.
However, this development brings up fresh worries, especially considering Paramount already operates as a fully established studio with its own staff and priorities.
Everyone was worried that if Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merged, there’d be massive layoffs as they combined staff to save money – we’ve already seen this happen recently with the Paramount/Skydance deal. But thankfully, it looks like Ellison doesn’t plan to cut jobs on the creative side, which means the teams at Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios should be okay, if this merger actually goes through. It’s a huge relief to hear that creativity might not be affected!
These comments surfaced months ago, so it’s uncertain if Ellison’s views have shifted, especially considering Paramount Skydance had to substantially raise its bid to win over Netflix.
What Does DC Studios Look Like Under Paramount?
It’s encouraging that Warner Bros. Discovery is keeping its creative leaders, which is good for DC Studios and other properties, but some changes are still likely to happen.
Bloomberg’s report highlights a trend of combining marketing and distribution departments at Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. This move is expected to lead to substantial job cuts at both companies.
Cutting staff in marketing and distribution might lead to fewer movies and TV shows being made overall. Bloomberg says the goal is still to release 30 films a year from both studios, meaning production numbers won’t necessarily decrease. However, it’s questionable whether that’s realistic with a smaller team handling promotion and release. This could potentially mean DC Studios will have to scale back its planned projects.
Fans don’t need to worry about how DC movies will be released. While Netflix quickly moves films to streaming, James Gunn has often said he prefers movies to play in theaters. This means future DC films, like a potential Man of Tomorrow sequel, will likely be shown in cinemas for the time being.
The future of DCU streaming is a bit uncertain now that Paramount owns HBO Max. While Paramount already has its own streaming service, Paramount+, reports suggest they’re considering combining the two. This might change how and where fans access DCU shows and movies, but those involved in creating the content are expected to remain the same, so the quality shouldn’t suffer.
