Paramount+ Just Canceled Its Best Crime Thriller of 2025 — Here’s Why That’s Disappointing

Good news for fans of the Taylor Sheridan crime drama Mayor of Kingstown: Paramount+ has renewed the show for a fifth season. However, this will also be the final season, which is a bit of a disappointment for many. Some believe Paramount+ might be making a mistake by ending the series after just five seasons, especially with the final season being shortened to only eight episodes, down from the usual ten.

Fans will be happy to hear that Mayor of Kingstown is getting a fifth and final season. However, announcing the end so soon after the fourth season – which surprisingly boosted the show’s popularity thanks to showrunner Dave Erickson – feels like a missed opportunity to build on that positive momentum.

Mayor Of Kingstown Ending After 5 Seasons Is A Huge Disappointment

As someone who watched Mayor of Kingstown every week as season 4 came out, I can tell you it really hit a new level last year. It was so good, it almost felt like a completely different show! Season 3 wrapped things up nicely, but season 4 came back with an incredibly gripping storyline. And the addition of Edie Falco, plus a bigger role for Richard Brake – who was honestly the best villain they’ve had so far as Merle Callahan – just made everything even better.

Last fall, Paramount took a unique approach by releasing new episodes of three popular Taylor Sheridan shows—Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Landman—all on the same day. Surprisingly, Mayor of Kingstown consistently ranked lowest in viewership on Paramount+’s streaming charts, despite receiving higher ratings than the other two shows.

In 2025, Mayor of Kingstown was Paramount+’s biggest hit with both critics and viewers. One of its episodes from season four earned a rare 9.3 rating on IMDb – matching the highest score ever for a Taylor Sheridan TV episode – and the season ended with a well-received finale. In contrast, Landman recently had its lowest-rated episode ever, and Tulsa King’s third season received its lowest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, dropping to just 56%.

Considering how fantastic season four was – really turning Mayor of Kingstown into a top-tier crime drama – a fifth season feels like a natural next step. The characters were incredibly well-developed, the plot was captivating, the visuals were striking, and the conflict surrounding Mike McLusky reached a thrilling high point. The show isn’t winding down at all; in fact, it’s currently at its best.

The upcoming season of Mayor of Kingstown will be its last, allowing the story to conclude as intended. However, with Taylor Sheridan still working with Paramount through 2029, it’s worth considering expanding the show’s universe. A prequel series focusing on Mike’s time as a prisoner at Anchor Bay—the show’s central prison—could be a good option.

It’s baffling why Paramount would end Mayor of Kingstown when it’s currently so popular and critically praised. Meanwhile, they’ve already renewed Tulsa King and Landman even though those shows have seen a decline in viewers. Ultimately, it seems viewership numbers are the deciding factor, and Mayor of Kingstown deserved a better chance.
