What is Paradise Season 2 Episode 5 about?

In the fourth episode, a new character named Gary revealed that he’s been friends with Xavier’s wife, Teri, for three years, and that she was recently harmed or taken. The fifth episode, called ‘The Mailman,’ explains what happened to her.
Like previous installments, this one jumps between different time periods, but most of the story unfolds in the past as Gary tells Xavier what happened.
Gary and Terri lived at the post office where Gary worked, but someone they trusted revealed their hiding place. This led to armed men capturing Terri. The narrative then jumps back in time five years.
Gary the Mailman

Gary Jones is a postal worker in Atlanta who lives a solitary life, with no close family or friends.
He spends his days working and enjoys listening to Counting Crows and playing video games. It’s through gaming that he first connects with the person who will become his friend, Ennis.
Ennis starts chatting about doomsday theories online, and they initially enjoy brainstorming how they’d survive. But it soon becomes apparent that Ennis genuinely believes these conspiracies are real.
Gary was happy to help and remembered his workplace basement used to be a bomb shelter, which would be ideal for what they needed. He immediately began ordering supplies and getting the space ready for whatever was about to happen.
The Day

When a catastrophic event causes widespread extinction, Gary and Ennis meet for the first time and begin traveling to a safe shelter. Along the way, Gary insists on helping a neglected young boy named Bean and Xavier’s wife, Teri, much to Ennis’s frustration, as he worries about having enough supplies for everyone.
The secretive group includes people with diverse skills – an engineer, carpenter, gardener, mechanic, survival expert, and a nurse. Ennis is attracted to the nurse, but she doesn’t reciprocate his feelings, which frustrates him greatly.
Despite their difficult circumstances, the group works well together. Teri focuses on giving Bean a normal childhood as much as possible, and Gary builds a radio so Bean can stay in touch with Xavier. Gary also attempts to start a romantic relationship with Teri, but she prefers they remain friends, and Teri agrees.
As time passes, Ennis becomes increasingly frustrated, jealous, and angry. This culminates in him breaking Teri’s radio, which he first tries to hide but eventually confesses to as the group prepares to leave and move on.
A train arrives nearby, and Gary and Ennis discover it’s carrying members of Link’s team. This team is working to restore the world, and they’re traveling to the same Colorado bunker that Teri hopes to reach so she can find Xavier.
The big twist

Gary informs Xavier that Teri and Bean were kidnapped by some men twelve days prior, but he has information about their location. Determined to save his wife, Xavier constructs a bomb as a diversion to aid in the rescue.
However, history shows us this never actually occurred. Instead, Ennis tells Gary to expect Teri to leave, and Gary reacts by shooting and killing him – a murder that Bean happens to see.
The episode concludes with Gary confessing to Xavier that he loved Teri, but she didn’t return his feelings. He promises to do everything he can to bring Xavier and Teri together, no matter the obstacles.
Xavier shook the man’s hand and immediately said, “Let’s go get my wife!” This impulsive decision put him in immediate and serious danger.
