Despite ongoing legal disputes with The Pokemon Company and Nintendo, game developer Pocketpair has unveiled their latest title on the Nintendo Switch platform.
The title of the game is Overdungeon, a unique blend of card game, tower defense, and roguelike features. Its real-time play involves cards depicting a variety of creatures such as cats, dogs, and alpacas. Initially launched for PC in 2019, today marks its unexpected debut on the Nintendo Switch, January 9.
Last year, The Pokemon Company filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, claiming they had violated Pokemon Company’s patented concepts. According to Pocketpair, the three Japanese patents in question pertained to the gameplay mechanics such as catching creatures by throwing balls, controlling characters within the game, and aiming at targets.
In December, Pocketpair made a change so that the Pal Spheres no longer emit the creatures. Now, these creatures simply materialize beside the player whenever they’re summoned.
The legal case is yet to be resolved, and its influence on the partnership between the two firms remains uncertain. Nevertheless, it appears that Pocketpair will continue launching their games on Nintendo’s platform without interference.
