Joe Carnahan, known for directing The Rip, directed Copshop, which was released in theaters on September 17, 2021. Although the film cost $43 million to make, it only earned $6.8 million at the box office. This was likely due to a combination of factors, including theaters still recovering from the pandemic and strong competition from blockbuster films like Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Adding to the difficulties, both the director and star Frank Grillo were unhappy with the studio, leading to disagreements over the film’s creative direction. This resulted in Carnahan largely skipping promotional events and Grillo publicly criticizing how his performance was presented. Here’s what the movie is about:

With his first theatrical lead role coming soon, now is a great time to revisit one of his earlier, standout performances that helped launch him to this point.

Although actor Vir Das’s performance has some weak spots, the biggest problem with the film is its script, written by Iliza Shlesinger. Das doesn’t seem comfortable with the material, which starts promisingly but quickly becomes confusing. The story ultimately falls apart due to an unbelievable twist that creates a massive plot hole, completely undermining the already fragile premise.

Streaming services, with their larger budgets and improved special effects, have helped science fiction become incredibly popular again. In the last few years, shows like Severance, Silo, 3 Body Problem, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Dune: Prophecy have become major hits. Notably, one sci-fi series on Netflix was inspired by a well-known movie from the genre.

I’ve been a big fan of Scott for years, and it’s amazing how many people know his music! But honestly, while he’s incredible as a rapper, I’m a little unsure about him as an actor. He’s only really dipped his toe in with a quick appearance on Ballers and a voice part in Trolls: Holiday in Harmony. That experimental film, Aggro Dr1ft, was mostly special effects, so it doesn’t really count. I get why fans are hesitant – it reminds me of when Harry Styles was cast in Dunkirk. If you want to see Christopher Nolan make a truly inspired celebrity casting choice, you have to go way back to David Bowie in The Prestige – that was perfect!
