After the Fantastic Beasts films didn’t perform as well as the original Harry Potter movies, Warner Bros. Discovery started planning a TV series based on J.K. Rowling’s books in late 2022. The plan was to release the series over ten years, staying true to the source material. Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, joined as showrunner in June 2024, and in May 2025, Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton were cast as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively.
