The Elder Scrolls Online’s New Battle Pass Is Breathing Life Into Old Zones Again

Before the recent introduction of Tamriel Tomes – essentially battle passes – Zenimax had already shown a tendency towards potentially exploitative microtransactions. Back in 2016, they added ‘Crown Crates’ – loot boxes – to the game. These crates encouraged players to spend money for a small chance at winning desirable items like mounts or cosmetics, though most of the time players only received things like dyes or potions. While the developers did later allow players to earn ‘Seals of Endeavor’ through gameplay to directly purchase crate contents, the addition of these practices still caused concern about the game becoming more focused on ongoing, live-service monetization.
