Despite featuring a relatively unknown cast, District 9 became a critical and commercial hit, earning $210 million worldwide – an impressive result for an independent film made with a $30 million budget. Remarkably, it also received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. This was a huge accomplishment for a first-time director, and while it didn’t win any awards, it cemented the film’s status as a sci-fi classic.
