The company that made the Paddington films is filing a lawsuit against the creators of the Spitting Image puppet show. StudioCanal claims Avalon illegally copied their work.
The Paddington films—Paddington, Paddington 2, and Paddington in Peru—have earned nearly $600 million worldwide, making them a very successful series for StudioCanal.
It’s understandable why the film company is so careful with Paddington Bear. Created by Michael Bond in the 1950s, he first appeared on television in the 1970s and later became a movie star in 2014.
A funny podcast parody on YouTube this summer has unexpectedly led to a legal battle – a courtroom showdown between two versions of Paddington Bear…
StudioCanal is suing Spitting Image over Paddington spoof
StudioCanal, the company behind the *Paddington* films, and the owners of the Paddington Bear character are taking legal action against Avalon. This follows an episode of Avalon’s *Spitting Image* series on YouTube, which portrayed Paddington as a host who uses strong language on a podcast, according to Deadline.
Spitting Image was a hugely popular British TV show from the 1980s. It used puppets to hilariously imitate politicians and celebrities, and regularly drew audiences of up to 15 million viewers on Sunday nights on ITV.
Avalon has been creating short, comedic sketches for YouTube based on the show ‘Spitting Image’. One recent example, available to watch above, spoofs the podcast ‘The Rest is Politics’ by featuring puppet versions of Prince Harry and Paddington Bear instead of the regular hosts, Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart.
The sketch, called ‘The Rest is Bulls*!t,’ has quickly gained over 500,000 views. It features a Paddington Bear who uses strong language and jokingly claims to have played Pablo Escobar in the show *Narcos*, and includes an interview with a puppet resembling Elon Musk.
The details of the legal case are still private, but it involves issues with copyright and design rights. The claim has been made in the UK High Court.
