Pac-Man Goes Trick-Or-Treating In Google’s Halloween Doodle

It’s Halloween, and Google is celebrating by bringing back a classic! You can play a special 45th anniversary version of Pac-Man directly on the Google homepage. This isn’t just the original game – Pac-Man’s maze has a spooky Halloween makeover with eight levels, including four haunted houses designed around the ghosts who live there.

Pac-Man became a massive hit as soon as it appeared in Japanese arcades in 1980. Created by Toru Iwatani, the game’s design was actually inspired by a pizza with a slice taken out! It was different from the popular space shooter games of the time, and its simple gameplay—eating dots, avoiding ghosts, and navigating mazes—was instantly addictive. Pac-Man even gave its ghosts unique personalities and names—Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde—which was a new level of character development for video games.

Last Halloween, I got to take Google’s cat, Momo, on a wild space trip, battling ghosts and even a spooky sun – it was a really cool interactive Doodle! Google’s been doing these for a while, like that cricket game from 2017 where you actually are the cricket, or the Coding for Carrots game that taught you how to code with a cute bunny. Now, they’ve added Pac-Man, and he’s on a tricky treat adventure – it’s awesome!

Okay, so you can actually play Pac-Man right now without needing a console! I just hopped onto Google’s homepage, clicked on the cool Doodle, and started playing. It’s only up for 48 hours, so I’m definitely grabbing some virtual candy and trying to beat my high score. If you’re curious, you can also check out all the other fun Doodles Google’s made!
