Okay, so I just read about this seriously cool robot, and it’s blowing my mind. It’s a humanoid – basically looks like a person – but the AI running it was trained on Buddhist teachings! It can walk, bow respectfully, and even talk about religion with people. Honestly, it’s giving me major Zenyatta from Overwatch vibes – super peaceful and wise. It’s like they built a real-life support character!
BuddhaDroid is a robot powered by “BuddhaBot Plus,” an AI created in 2023. This AI was specifically trained using ancient Buddhist writings.
A new system, detailed by Japan’s Mainichi Shimbun, uses the recorded teachings of Buddha to answer questions. It first responds using the original scriptural language, then adds explanations to make the answers relevant to modern audiences.
AI monk robot assists with religious ceremonies
Seiji Kumagai from Kyoto University’s Institute for the Future of Human Society is heading up this project, working with the AI company Teraverse.
I’ve been following this AI project for a while now, and it’s amazing to see how far it’s come! At first, it was all about getting the AI to talk like a monk. But now, with this new version, BuddhaDroid, they’ve actually given it a physical form! It’s incredible – this little robot monk actually moves like one, walking slowly and respectfully. It even bows and puts its hands together in prayer when it ‘sees’ Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and other monks. It’s so much more immersive now!
Researchers have unveiled “Buddharoid,” an AI robot designed to engage in conversations about Buddhism. While initially featuring the voice of a young man, the robot’s voice can be adjusted to different genders and age groups. Some users have noted a discrepancy between the robot’s appearance and traditional depictions of Buddha, jokingly suggesting its clothing choices – or lack thereof – could be improved with more traditional garments like kimonos or work clothes.

BuddhaBot Plus is a highly advanced system that uses the newest ChatGPT technology to create realistic, spoken conversations. It combines voice and speech technology with physical movements, allowing for natural interactions as if you were talking to a real person.
So, I heard about this robot they’re building, and it’s pretty wild. Apparently, it’s meant to be like a digital monk you can talk to – a good option if you’re shy or can’t easily get access to one. Plus, they think it could even help out with some of the work at temples, especially since there’s a shortage of people to do everything. It’s like a helping hand for religious ceremonies, which is a really interesting idea!
BuddhaDroid is just one example of how robots are gaining attention. Artificial intelligence is already impacting our lives in many ways – from self-driving cars and automated workplaces to helping doctors and patients in hospitals – increasingly blending the online and real worlds.
