Okay, so Overwatch’s Season 1 is finally here – feels like another fresh start, right? This update is HUGE. They’ve added five new heroes, completely revamped the user interface (it’s about time!), made a ton of improvements behind the scenes, and tweaked the balance of pretty much everything. I’m diving in to check it all out, and here’s everything you need to know.
Overwatch is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Thousands of players are returning to the game with the launch of a new year-long story and a lot of fresh content.
The developers have made a significant change – they’ve removed the ‘2’ from the game’s title. It’s now simply Overwatch, reverting to the original name.
Before you start exploring the new features, take a moment to review the complete Season 1 patch notes here.
Overwatch Season 1 patch notes
GENERAL UPDATES
Comms/Ping Updates
Praise
We’ve added “Praise” as a new, default option to the Comms Wheel! Now, tapping the Comms Wheel button will let you compliment your teammates with unique voice lines for each hero.
By default, the Comms Wheel button will function like the Ping button, with a small delay (0.18 seconds) before the wheel appears. You can turn this new feature off with the “Enable Quick Press Praise” setting in the Options menu, and adjust the delay using the “Comms Wheel Press Delay” setting.
If you prefer to quickly flick to a specific Comms Wheel option, any mouse or stick movement will cancel this short delay.
You can add Praise to your Comms Wheel in the Options, but it won’t be there automatically.
We’ve added new voice lines to improve team communication! During the setup phase in Attack/Defend modes, heroes will now suggest good positions to teammates when players use neutral pings. Heroes will also more clearly ask for healing when no support players are nearby. On escort and hybrid maps, defenders are now more likely to warn their team if an enemy tries to sneak onto the payload. Finally, heroes will automatically alert their team when they detect a nearby invisible enemy (like Sombra).
This update features similar functionality to how heroes react to Widowmaker aiming at them, alerting teammates. Players can now target an allied Jetpack Cat and ping to request a pickup, accompanied by a voice line. The “On My Way” communication now displays an estimated time of arrival (ETA) in seconds in the text chat when aiming at a teammate, calculated based on the player’s speed.
Here are the bug fixes included:
The ping system’s spam protection now functions correctly during the “Waiting For Players” phase.
Support players will no longer hear the healing ping sound when another support pings an injured ally.
* Progress towards the “Not So Thankless” challenge should now register more consistently when receiving thanks from a teammate.
We’ve made some updates to the Advanced Info Panel! First, we’ve added information for all 5 new heroes. We’ve also clarified how Cleanses work, separating them into ‘Lesser Cleanses’ (more common) and ‘Greater Cleanses’ (rarer and able to remove Stuns). We’ve updated the definitions of these terms for clarity.
Additionally, we’ve added definitions for several new keywords that appear in hero abilities:
Aura: An ability that generates energy when dealing damage or healing (like Mizuki’s Remedy Aura).
Break: Removes effects that ‘Tether’ heroes together (seen in abilities like Jetpack Cat’s Catnapper, Lifeweaver’s Life Grip, Reinhardt’s Charge, and Roadhog’s Chain Hook).
Displace: Moves a hero and prevents them from acting, interrupting abilities in progress. This effect cannot be cleansed (examples: Doomfist’s Rocket Punch, Reinhardt’s Charge, Roadhog’s Chain Hook).
Heat: An ability that stops working when overheated and cools down automatically (like Emre’s Siphon Blaster and Orisa’s Augmented Fusion Driver).
Immobilize: Prevents a hero from moving (seen in Hazard’s Downpour, Lucio’s Soundwave, Wrecking Ball’s Piledriver, and Zarya’s Graviton Surge).
Tether: Attaches a hero to a location or another hero within a certain range until the effect ends (examples: Jetpack Cat’s Lifeline, Jetpack Cat’s Catnapper, Mauga’s Cage Fight, and Mizuki’s Binding Chain).
We’ve given the game a fresh new look, putting your friends and favorite heroes front and center! You can now easily show off your best skins and connect with friends through the new social panel.
We’ve also introduced a Notification Hub – a central place to find all important updates like rewards, reports, and news, eliminating annoying pop-ups. This is the first step toward a cleaner login experience.
Here’s what else is new:
Loot Boxes: Now include cosmetics from Seasons 15-20.
Player Titles: Titles now come in different rarities, from Common to Legendary.
Options:
You can now adjust the Field of View on Xbox Series X, Playstation 5, and Playstation 5 Pro.
Separate volume controls have been added for Lobby sound effects and music.
Controller settings are now organized into three categories – Controller, Controller Deadzone, and Aim Assist – making them easier to find and customize.
COMPETITIVE PLAY UPDATES
Competitive Element
With the addition of five new heroes and changes to existing ones, we’re resetting ranks to give everyone a fresh start and a chance to climb in a dynamic environment. All Competitive Play ranks (Role Queue and Open Queue) have been reset to Unranked, and players need to complete 10 placement matches for each role. Hero Skill Ratings have also been reset.
This reset doesn’t change the overall distribution of players across ranks – you’ll see a similar number of players in each rank once everyone has been re-evaluated.
Here’s what’s new with rewards:
The Crimson Wolf weapon variant replaces Galactic and will be available to unlock with Competitive Points after the first two weeks of the season.
Galactic joins Gold and Jade as a Legacy Reward.
Reaching Diamond rank or higher unlocks Doomfist’s Crimson Wolf skin.
Competitive Points earned in 2025 have been converted to Legacy Competitive Points.
Regarding Top 500:
We listened to your feedback and are bringing back the “Top 500” name! The leaderboard is now called “Top 500 Challenger.”
You can now sort the Top 500 Challenger leaderboard by Rank. Rewards are based on Challenger Score, and only players with a sufficient score will be displayed with a rank.
We’ve updated how Challenger Score is earned. Previously, it was based on the rank of the highest-ranked player in your match. Now, your Challenger Score will always be determined by your own rank.
● Diamond removed from Top 500 Challenger eligibility
To qualify for the Top 500 Challenger rank, the required skill level has been changed from Seasoned Competitor to Adept Competitor.
● Challenger Score deduction on loss increased from 33% to 40%
Rewards
Top 500 Challenger players will again receive exclusive player icons. New icons will be released with each rank reset, which happens every three seasons. If you place in the Top 500 during Seasons 1, 2, or 3 of the Rise of Talon, you’ll earn the corresponding Conquest Top 500 Challenger icon.
Social Links Update
We’re improving how we add social media links for well-known players to the leaderboards. Season 21 will allow us to include links for many more players.
We’ve found that some older Battle.net accounts without a birthdate set can’t see these social links. This feature is intended for players 18+, and the missing birthdate is currently blocking access. We’re working on a fix and apologize for the inconvenience.
We’ve adjusted how Challenger Score is awarded based on rank, giving higher payouts to the top players. Here’s the new breakdown:
Master 5: 20
Master 4: 30
Master 3: 40
Master 2: 50
Master 1: 60
Grandmaster 5: 100
Grandmaster 4: 125
Grandmaster 3: 150
Grandmaster 2: 175
Grandmaster 1: 200
Champion 5: 250
Champion 4: 300
Champion 3: 400
Champion 2: 550
* Champion 1: 700
We’ve also made it easier to appear on the Top 500 Challenger Leaderboard. The required Challenger Score has been reduced to 2000 for both Combined Role and Open Queue, and to 1500 for each individual role.
Finally, the maximum Heat Bonus has been increased from 40% to 100%.
Bug Fixes● Fixed the Friends Leaderboard being organized randomly.
HERO UPDATES
Okay, so a big change just dropped! Now, as a player, I can see how much health my teammates have, even if they’re behind a wall. Before, only support characters had that ability, but now it’s universal. It’s gonna make a huge difference in team fights, knowing who needs help at a glance!
Here’s a quick update to the team roster:
Domina joins the Tank role.
Anran and Emre have been added as Damage players.
* Jet Pack Cat and Mizuki are now on the Support team.
We’ve made some changes to aim assist on consoles. Players can now choose a ‘Legacy’ option to use the older aim assist settings. Additionally, a small auto-aim adjustment (previously applied to a few heroes) is now active for all heroes who use hitscan weapons. This adjustment won’t apply if you’re using the Legacy Aim Assist setting.
Sub Roles
The Tank role now gains ultimate charge faster from both healing and damage taken (reduced by 40%). Tanks also receive 150 bonus health in Role Queue modes. Previously, the Tank role passive granted knockback and critical damage resistance, but those effects have been removed.
The Damage role passive has been removed entirely. However, effects previously granted by it are now standard for all heroes. These include a 30% reduction to in-combat healing received when dealing damage, and a 15% reduction in damage dealt to Tanks.
Support Role Passive● Removed.
● Global regeneration after 6 seconds remains unchanged.
Some Tank heroes—D.Va, Doomfist, Winston, and Wrecking Ball—excel at starting fights. A unique feature for these heroes is that being in the air provides a small amount of healing. Specifically, they receive 75 health over 1 second if they remain airborne for at least 0.8 seconds.
Certain heroes are designated as either ‘Bruisers’ or ‘Stalwarts’, granting them special defensive benefits.
Bruiser heroes (Mauga, Orisa, Roadhog, Zarya) take less damage when critically wounded and gain a speed boost when their health is low. Specifically, they receive a 25% reduction in critical damage and a 20% movement speed increase when at critical health.
Stalwart heroes (Domina, Hazard, Junker Queen, Ramattra, Reinhardt, Sigma) are more resistant to being pushed or slowed down. They have 40% resistance to both knockback and slows.
Here’s a breakdown of the Damage role’s sub-roles and their unique benefits:
Damage Specialist: (Bastion, Emre, Junkrat, Mei, Soldier: 76, Symmetra, Torbjörn)
Killing an enemy briefly speeds up your reload time by 50% for 3 seconds.
Recon: (Pharah, Freja, Echo, Sombra)
Damaging an enemy when their health is below 50% reveals their location through walls for 5 seconds.
Flanker: (Anran, Genji, Reaper, Tracer, Vendetta, Venture)
Picking up health packs will restore an additional 75 health.
Sharpshooter: (Ashe, Cassidy, Hanzo, Sojourn, Widowmaker)
Landing critical hits reduces the cooldown time of your movement abilities. The cooldown reduction is equal to 0.75% of the damage dealt.
Here’s a breakdown of the Support sub-roles and their effects:
Tactician: (Ana, Baptiste, Jetpack Cat, Lúcio, Zenyatta)
Players with this role keep any extra ultimate charge after using their ultimate. They have a 25% bonus to their ultimate charge cap, but gain ultimate charge 25% slower when already at 100%.
Medic: (Kiriko, Lifeweaver, Mercy, Moira)
When these heroes heal allies with their weapon, they also heal themselves, receiving 25% of the healing they deal.
Survivor: (Brigitte, Illari, Juno, Mizuki, Wuyang)
Using a movement ability (like a dash or jump) starts a period of passive health regeneration.
Hero Balance Changes
D.Va’s base health has been reduced in both 5v5 and 6v6 modes. In 5v5, her base health went from 375 to 325, and her total health from 700 to 650. In 6v6, her base health was lowered from 300 to 250, and her total health from 600 to 550.
Here’s a breakdown of the recent hero changes:
Mauga: His Kinetic Bandolier perk now instantly grants 150 ammo when triggered, instead of providing it gradually.
Orisa: The cooldown for her Protective Barrier has been increased from 8 to 10 seconds. Additionally, animation issues with her Charged Javelin have been fixed.

Roadhog: The duration of his Take a Breather ability has been extended from 2.5 to 3 seconds. His Pulled Pork perk now grants a maximum of 300 overhealth, up from 250.
Sigma’s experimental barrier now has less health, reduced from 700 to 650. Additionally, his Hyper Regeneration perk, which converts damage into barrier health, is less effective – it now converts only 40% of damage, down from 50%.

SUPPORT
Baptiste’s abilities have been adjusted. His Assault Burst perk is now a minor perk, with a slight decrease in attack speed (from 25% to 20%). The Biotic Reloader perk has been removed. The range of his Immortality Field has been increased by 30%. Automated Healing is now a major perk, and it now heals for 40 per shot, up from 25.
Here’s what’s changing for Illari: Her Solar Rifle’s secondary fire now restores fewer resources (reduced from 43 to 35). The cooldown for her Outburst ability has been increased from 7 to 8 seconds. Finally, her Solar Flare major perk no longer uses resources, but it now has a 10-second cooldown.
Okay, so Kiriko’s getting some changes! Her Healing Ofuda now flies faster – they sped up the projectile speed quite a bit. They also reworked Swift Step; it doesn’t cleanse negative effects anymore when I use it. And her Foxtrot perk is different now. They took away the cooldown recovery boost, but they doubled how long the movement speed buff lasts, which is awesome. I’ll definitely be able to zip around the map for longer now!
Okay, so Lifeweaver’s getting some changes! The big thing is his Tree of Life – it’s way better now because it converts all overhealing into extra health, not just half! They’ve removed a few of his smaller perks – Lifeweaving, Cleaning Grasp, and Petal Power are gone. But Petal Protection is still around, and now allies get healed 20 health per second just by standing on his platforms, which is awesome. Dashing Escape is also tweaked – his dash goes 30% further now. And finally, his Sow the Seed perk is really interesting. If you use a quick melee attack while you have Healing Blossom equipped, you throw a seed. If your teammates pick it up, they get a ton of extra health and a speed boost for five seconds. Seems like a really fun update!
Mercy has had some changes to her abilities. Her ‘Sympathetic Recovery’ passive ability has been removed. However, her ‘Swift Recovery’ passive now causes health regeneration to start more quickly.
Here’s what’s changed for Moira and Wuyang:
Moira: Her ‘Destruction’s Divide’ perk now gives a 30% bonus to focused healing/damage, up from 25%.
Wuyang: His ‘Restorative Stream’ now provides 20% passive healing (reduced from 25%) and 55% beam healing (increased from 50%).
