Overwatch is becoming popular again! Player numbers are soaring, nearly reaching record highs, thanks to big plans for 2026. The first season update will include the launch of five new playable characters.

With a huge Season 1 update coming—including a redesigned interface, the start of a continuing story, and five new playable characters—many players are returning to the game to get reacquainted.
The popular team-based shooter is doing incredibly well, nearly reaching its record for the number of players online at the same time on Steam, and this is happening before the big update has even launched.
Overwatch player count closing in on all-time peak ahead of Season 1
As of today, Overwatch has reached a peak of nearly 70,000 concurrent players on Steam – its highest number ever. While the game has seen similar player counts around major updates in the past, this is a new record for the game.
Overwatch 2 just hit its highest player count since its release in August 2023, with 75,608 players online at the same time today.
The game continues to be popular, and with the first season update launching soon on February 10, 2026, that doesn’t seem likely to change.
Overwatch 2 is experiencing a notable comeback, especially considering its low point just over a year ago. When Marvel Rivals was gaining popularity, Overwatch 2 hit its all-time low with only 16,919 players online at the same time on Steam. Interestingly, some players are jokingly thanking Marvel Rivals for pushing Blizzard to improve and retain its audience.
With a clear plan for the coming year, players are quickly returning to the game. However, it’s important to remember that these numbers only come from Steam and don’t include players on Battle.net or consoles.
Overwatch is looking good as it prepares for the start of Season 1! Players will soon be able to try out five new characters, including the highly anticipated hero, Jetpack Cat – and it’s really happening this time.
