Blizzard redesigned the hero Anran after players criticized her initial appearance in the game.
When Anran was added to Overwatch in Season 1, many players were eager to play her, drawn to her fire-based powers. This excitement was boosted by her previous appearance in a cinematic trailer with her brother, Wuyang.
When the character’s in-game design was initially shown, fans weren’t very impressed. A lot of the complaints centered around her face, which players thought looked different from how she appeared in the game’s trailers, and even her voice actress noticed the discrepancy.
After hearing what players wanted, Blizzard showed off the updated character design, which will be available in Season 2.
Blizzard reveals Anran’s new look in Season 2
Anran’s new character model has a much bolder and more powerful appearance compared to how she looks in the game now.
For Season 2, we’ve redesigned Anran. We realized she didn’t quite come across as the strong, passionate sister of Wuyang we envisioned. So, our team worked on making her a more impactful and memorable character. This change is based on both our original ideas and…

Game Director Aaron Keller says the updates center on Tracer’s face—specifically her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth—to give her a less youthful appearance.
As a fan, I immediately noticed how much more expressive her eyes are now – they really seem to focus on you! The artists also subtly changed her face with some lovely details: darker shading around the eyes, a bunch of cute freckles, and more defined cheeks and jawline. They even lifted her eyebrows a bit, which gives her a really dynamic look. It’s a fantastic refresh!
And not only her face, but her posture has also been updated, giving her a “more confident pose.”
Her new appearance was shared on Overwatch’s official X account, with Aaron explaining the changes:

We aim for our characters to feel distinct and for their appearances to reflect who they are. We didn’t fully achieve that with Anran’s initial release, according to the team.
We felt her initial design made her seem too young and naive. The character, Anran, is actually strong-willed, confident, and a natural leader, so we’re updating her appearance in the game to better reflect those traits.
Many players have expressed their gratitude to the developers for being receptive to feedback and making improvements, and they’ve also commended the team’s hard work.
One user admitted they initially expected the appearance to be bad, saying, “Honestly, I thought they were going to make her look terrible.” They were pleasantly surprised, though, and added, “I was wrong, it actually looks really good.”
