Overwatch announces new DPS hero Sierra ahead of season 2 launch

Blizzard has announced the 51st hero for Overwatch: Sierra. She’s a new Damage-role character and will be playable when the game’s second season begins on April 14th.

A new animated trailer for the Watchpoint: Grand Mesa map reveals Sierra in action. She skillfully intervenes in a heist, successfully stopping Emre and Freja. She uses a special dart to redirect Emre’s gunfire back at him, and quickly moves around the fight using her drone, DoROTHy.

The dart eventually detonates, and Emre escapes anyway.

Who is Sierra in Overwatch?

We haven’t seen gameplay yet, but the trailer gives a good idea of how this new hero will play. According to Alec Dawson, an Overwatch game director, the season 2 hero would feature a rewarding, aimed ability, and the self-seeking dart seems to be that ability.

The bigger mystery isn’t just what Sierra does, but who she is. For weeks, fans thought she might be Frankie, a character from a related novel who uses a small drone to communicate. Sierra also uses a drone and has connections to the same group as Frankie. However, the latest trailer suggests she’s actually opposing that group, not working with them. It’s still uncertain if this is a change to established lore, a deliberate attempt to mislead viewers, or if Sierra is simply a different character altogether.

The new season, called Summit, will also see Overwatch released on the Nintendo Switch 2 on April 14th. Blizzard updated the game in February, removing the “2” from the title and adding five new playable characters. Sierra is the sixth of ten planned heroes arriving by 2026, and all of these characters are connected to the Talon storyline that began last season.
