Overwatch 2’s Latest Hero Is The Crossbow-Wielding Bounty Hunter Freya

2025 will see the debut of the initial new hero in Overwatch 2: Freya, a dynamic bounty hunter armed with an explosive crossbow. Her abilities include dashing swiftly across the battlefield and soaring through the air.

During the Overwatch 2 Spotlight livestream, Blizzard unveiled Freya, focusing on her role as a damage hero. Originally a search-and-rescue operative, Freya now operates as a bounty hunter. Her primary attack involves swiftly firing bolts at enemies using her crossbow. In contrast, her secondary fire allows her to charge up an explosive bolt for significant damage after aiming carefully.

Freya appears to heavily rely on movement and positioning, as Blizzard describes her as a “difficult yet rewarding” character that requires “precision and a steady aim to master.” She boasts a swift dash ability which reloads her crossbow concurrently, and a move called Updraft that propels her skyward. Her Bola Shot skill draws enemies together, creating an opportunity for her teammates to inflict damage or for Freya to land a powerful explosive shot from her crossbow.

In the upcoming season 16, Freya is set to be added to the team in Overwatch 2. However, players can test her skills ahead of time during the trial weekend in season 15.

Apart from detailing Freya, Blizzard also unveiled another new hero – Aqua, a Chinese hero who manipulates water with his staff. This character is set to debut in Overwatch 2 during Season 18 as announced by Blizzard, promising a unique gameplay style. At present, only concept art for Aqua has been released, but further details regarding his abilities will be disclosed closer to his launch date.

During Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 Spotlight stream, it was revealed that some fresh heroes were only a small part of the many announcements to follow. To begin with, loot boxes are making a comeback in Overwatch 2 starting from Season 15. Moreover, Perks have been introduced as a key gameplay feature in Overwatch 2, and a new round-based, third-person mode called Stadium has also been announced. In this mode, players will be able to buy items and enhance their heroes throughout the course of a match.
