In Overwatch 2, they’ve brought back the cherished Classic mode, which now includes balance tweaks that revive the notorious “Moth” strategy from the end of 2017 in the original Overwatch. While some enthusiasts are thrilled about its comeback, others have criticized Blizzard for how they implemented it, leading to a divided response. Here’s a rundown of the current sentiments towards the “Moth” strategy in Overwatch 2’s Classic mode.
Overwatch Classic Brings Back the Moth Meta – But Not Quite How You Remember It
In Overwatch 2, some players link the most challenging team setups to GOATS or Double Shield, but the Mercy Moth Meta also ranks high in terms of tough and aggravating compositions. As Overwatch Classic resurfaces, so does the balance of the Moth Meta, with Mercy once more being a key character.

In simpler terms, Mercy will retrieve a significant portion of her equipment from the Moth Meta. This includes her Resurrection skill with a cooldown and the ability to revive two teammates during her 20-second ultimate. Nevertheless, reactions towards this updated classic mode are diverse. Some players are thrilled by her return as a healing figurehead, while others express reservations about her current equilibrium.
On one hand, some gamers are elated by Moth Meta Mercy’s comeback, with comments such as “WE’RE BACK!!!” and “AS A NEW MERCY MAIN, THIS IS EXCITING!”. Conversely, other players are disheartened, believing that the updates don’t adequately capture the essence of the original Moth Meta.
Why is Valkyrie nerfed in Moth Classic?

One significant change is that Mercy no longer possesses her immediate Resurrection ability from the Moth Meta. Although she still has a 1-second animation, this detracts from the intended swiftness of an instant Resurrection. Another notable feature that contributed to the “Moth” nickname was her Guardian Angel speed, which previously enabled her to move quickly like a fighter jet, making her more challenging to target – much like a moth is difficult to catch due to its swift flight.
Currently, her speed appears to have been reduced significantly, and she lacks the extraordinary mobility that was evident in Overwatch 1. One player succinctly expressed their thoughts about the recent announcement, stating, “Regrettably, there’s no instant resurrection option. It takes around a second to cast, and it’s even slower in Valkeryss case. Additionally, her ultimate (Gauntlet) speed seems to be bugged in Valk.” Hopefully, these issues will get addressed promptly.
