Players of Overwatch 2 are generally relishing the latest Overwatch Classic “Moth Meta” event, with some advocating that one underappreciated aspect should become a permanent fixture in the game.
In Overwatch Classic, players can step back in time to revisit familiar aspects from the game’s past. This includes iconic characters like DPS Doomfist and Support Moth Mercy, the traditional 2CP game mode, the absence of passive roles, and the classic 6v6 team composition without role-specific queues.
However, a seemingly minor aspect has sparked significant interest across social platforms. Upon encountering the revamped character selection animation, players experienced a wave of nostalgia reminiscent of the original hero pick screen from Overwatch. This particular animation was updated when Overwatch transformed into Overwatch 2.
Now, players are requesting these animations return permanently, or at least as an option.
Bringing back classic Overwatch animations
Given that these animations continue to be part of the game and considering Blizzard’s history of preserving older features, members of the Overwatch community have started discussions on Reddit, asking for methods to view classic hero selection animations beyond the Overwatch Classic event.
“It would be nice to be able to select which ones we want to see,” wrote one user.
One player proposed a scenario where both animations could coexist simultaneously. This player suggests that the initial animations would play when the “Overwatch 1” skin is activated or selected.
Seeing the original Hero Select Animations again fills me with so much joy. They’re straigh up better than the OW2 reanimated ones, why can’t we have these by default?

The user proposed an idea that if you select the original hero costume in Overwatch 1, you’d receive the Overwatch 1 variant of that character, complete with voice lines and additional interactions. They added that it would be a delightful touch to incorporate this feature.
In summary, although the post garnered around 1.8k positive reactions, a section of gamers argue that the character selection animations in the original Overwatch are not as impressive when compared to those featured in Overwatch 2.
“Ehhhh, not really, lots of the old animations are shorter,” protested one player.
“Nostalgic? Sure. Better? Probably not, but that depends on each person,” said another.
Regardless of your position, you have until February 18 to savor Overwatch Classic and all its restored elements. During this time, you can test out the Damage Per Second (DPS) character Doomfist or re-experience Mercy’s numerous resurrections.
