In Overwatch 2 starting from Season 15 on February 18, one of the popular aspects from the original game, loot boxes, will return. However, unlike before, they won’t be available for direct purchase.
Or, more casually:
Loot boxes, a well-liked feature in the initial Overwatch, are making a comeback in Overwatch 2 as part of Season 15 on February 18. But don’t worry, they won’t be up for sale like they used to be.
Instead, loot boxes will make a comeback in Overwatch 2 through its seasonal free and premium battle passes, along with rewards for weekly and special event challenges. Blizzard aims to enhance the system’s transparency by providing players with detailed information about drop rates for items and guarantees on rarity.
As a gamer, I’ve found out that any Rare or better quality items could potentially drop from each loot box I open. After cracking five loot boxes, I’m ensured an Epic-quality item, and after opening 20, a guaranteed Legendary one. Interestingly, the legendary loot boxes, either one of which can be obtained through the free battle pass (and two through the premium battle pass), always contain a Legendary item without fail.
Next week, Blizzard plans to reveal further information about the reintroduction of loot boxes in Overwatch. It’s quite significant because, initially, loot boxes were criticized for being microtransactions due to their random rewards. However, now, Blizzard is pointing to the community’s requests as the driving force behind their comeback.
Overwatch 2 abandoned loot boxes upon its transformation from Overwatch 1 in 2022 and switched to a free-to-play model. Since then, fans have expressed disappointment about fewer rewards in Overwatch 2 compared to the original version, with the primary way to acquire free cosmetics being through the battle pass or occasional events. In contrast, players in the initial Overwatch game routinely earned loot boxes simply by leveling up their account via playtime, a feature that was eliminated for the sequel.
During its recent Overwatch 2 Spotlight livestream, Blizzard unveiled several surprises, including the reintroduction of loot boxes and Season 15 features like Perks – customizable abilities for each hero in Overwatch 2 that players can select during a game. Furthermore, Blizzard shared details about a new third-person, round-based mode called Stadium, which is set to debut in Season 16. This mode is expected to turn Overwatch 2 into a game more akin to Valve’s upcoming Deadlock or Counter-Strike.
