Oversight or something deeper? There may be a detail in the Fallout series that contradicts the first game

The second season of Fallout is coming out in just a few days, and it’s widely considered one of the best video game adaptations we’ve seen recently. Fans are excited to see what happens next with Lucy and Ghoul, and the show’s popularity has sparked renewed interest in the Fallout universe – lots of people are now checking out the original games made by Interplay Entertainment.

It’s understandable that fans are trying to link the story with what’s shown in the games. Many have pointed out some details that don’t quite add up when it comes to how the world ended and was rebuilt.

An oversight by the antagonist or the creators?

Anyone who played the original Fallout likely remembers the Master, the villain who sought out and captured people who hadn’t been exposed to radiation, hoping to build an army of super mutants. A fan recently pointed out that the show’s Vault 33 is located very close to the Master’s old base.

This makes you wonder how the Master could have missed this vault when he first looked for places to explore. There are a lot of possible explanations, and simply blaming it on a mistake by the game developers doesn’t quite cover it.

Many commenters have noted that the Master didn’t have much information when creating his mutants. Because of this, and the fact that his mutants weren’t particularly intelligent, they couldn’t locate every vault without some guidance. It’s likely Vault 33 was simply missed and wasn’t included in the attack plan.

Okay, so it’s not like this is the first time something’s just…vanished from someone’s property. I’ve been reading the comments, and apparently, even the authorities here in the US have seen stuff like this happen before. It’s a little unsettling, honestly.

It seems likely this doorway used to be part of a larger structure. The owner probably didn’t know where every hidden room was, so it’s possible he simply overlooked this one.

As a big Fallout fan, I’ve been digging into the backstory, and it’s fascinating! Apparently, according to the official Fallout ‘bible’ – which isn’t always 100% confirmed canon, but it’s what we’ve got – the Master only knew about Vaults 1, 2, and 3 because of information he found inside the demo vault. He did eventually find Vault 17, but it makes a lot of sense to me that the mutants weren’t really searching around the Los Angeles coastline. They simply didn’t know there was anything out that way, so they probably just missed those first three vaults!

It’s amazing what people lose and then rediscover – sometimes after decades! There are real stories of items turning up in backyards years later. Incredibly, the US Army even lost a tank in Virginia and it wasn’t found for 27 years – a hunter eventually stumbled upon it in the woods.

There’s a belief that Vault 33 was designed to keep outside threats out, which fits with Vault-Tec’s goal of creating compliant and unaware inhabitants. Discovering that someone was abducting residents and turning them into monsters would definitely shatter that sense of security, wouldn’t it?

Some players think the whole situation was just an error by Bethesda and Amazon, and that’s certainly possible. We likely won’t ever have a definitive answer, but it’s still fun to consider the possibilities when something so interesting happens.
