Video games are incredibly popular these days, with many titles – even ones you might not know – attracting millions of dedicated fans. I’d been aware of this particular game for some time, but hadn’t tried it until recently. This month, the game’s creator, Kabam, invited me to visit their offices in Vancouver. I got to tour the workspace, talk to the team, and attend their event, which combined a live tournament with a fan festival.
Okay, so as someone who’s basically lived and breathed gaming and nerd culture my whole life – and I also write about it – going to this event was a total must. I really wanted to get what makes this fandom tick, so I spent the whole weekend diving in. It was amazing to see what everyone was so hyped about, especially when it comes to this mobile fighting game. Honestly, the sheer number of characters – over 300 Marvel heroes and villains! – is just incredible. You won’t find that kind of roster depth in many other games, period.
Marvel Contest of Champions Has Been Live for Over 11 Years
Launched in 2014 by Kabam and Marvel, Marvel Contest of Champions has steadily grown and improved over the years. It’s a fighting game where players pit hundreds of Marvel comic characters against each other in one-on-one battles. What makes this game stand out, especially for a mobile title from that time, is its strong emphasis on storytelling. Each mission is carefully woven into the Marvel universe with a coherent and official story, adding depth and context to the gameplay.
It’s impressive that Marvel Contest of Champions is still moving forward with the same main story it began over 11 years ago. Most comic book storylines don’t last that long without significant changes, making this mobile game one of the longest-running and most consistent narratives in the entire Marvel universe.
The game’s basic gameplay is surprisingly straightforward. You choose a team of characters for missions, and battles are fast-paced. You move by swiping the left side of the screen, and attack using taps and swipes on the right – tap for a quick attack, swipe for a medium one, and hold for a powerful attack. You can also charge up a special meter to unleash strong abilities, or hold the left side to defend. It’s easy to learn, feels natural, and is very captivating.
Summoners Fest 2025 Brought Hundreds of Players Together In-Person
Kabam deeply values the players of Marvel Contest of Champions – they are essential to the game’s success. The game has fostered strong communities, including large alliances, dedicated content creators who’ve built careers around it, and lasting friendships. Earlier this month at Summoners Fest, Kabam invited hundreds of players to their offices. The event featured opportunities to test upcoming features and characters, win in-game prizes with a prize wheel, and enjoy live battles, trivia, character reveals, and announcements about new game modes.
I met many long-time fans at the event, including couples who’ve played the game together for years – some even with their children! When a game stays popular for over a decade, it often becomes something families share across generations. This is especially true when it’s easy to play on many different phones and devices.
Summoners Fest was a huge success, bustling with activity for both days. Once attendees arrived, they tended to stay all day, demonstrating the strong community Kabam has built around their game – something that’s increasingly uncommon these days. While Kabam has sunsetted some of its own titles, like Marvel Realm of Champions and Disney Mirrorverse, Marvel Contest of Champions remains incredibly popular. In a recent interview, Kabam CEO Simon Sim confirmed that it’s their most important game, and it’s clear to see why.
More Than 300 Million People Have Played Across Mobile And PC
During my conversation with Sim, I learned that over 300 million people have downloaded Marvel Contest of Champions on mobile devices and PCs. The PC version is new, launching earlier this year, and early reviews are positive. It looks much better on PC than on mobile, and it’s surprisingly fun to play with a gamepad. While playing with a keyboard feels a bit strange, it is possible.
I’ve been playing Marvel Contest of Champions for ages, and honestly, it’s one of the few mobile games that just keeps getting better. It’s been around a long time, and the developers consistently deliver – new characters drop every month, there’s always fresh content, and the storylines keep me hooked. It’s pretty rare to find a game that’s been going for this long and still feels good to play.
Throughout this month, we’ll be sharing more reports from Summoners Fest and additional details from our interviews. We’re continuing to explore the reasons behind the game’s widespread appeal.
