Over 200 Rockstar Devs Sign Letter Demanding Fired Staff Be Reinstated

In late October, Rockstar Games dismissed over 30 employees in the UK and Canada. The company stated the firings were due to serious misconduct, but the affected employees claim they were let go for trying to form a union. This dispute is now potentially headed for legal action.

More than 200 employees at Rockstar Games have signed a letter asking the company to give jobs back to colleagues who were recently fired. Those fired workers were all part of the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, which strongly criticized Rockstar, calling their actions the most aggressive attempt to suppress a union in the history of the video game industry.

Workers who were laid off have been protesting alongside current employees and allies outside the offices of Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. More protests are scheduled to take place at the companies’ London and Paris locations later this week.

The Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) union is disputing Rockstar’s accusations that former employees shared confidential company or game details on the union’s Discord server. The IWGB has also started legal proceedings against Rockstar, which could lead to a lengthy court case.

One former employee shared that it’s encouraging to see so many colleagues standing with them and challenging management, especially when Rockstar seems to be trying to intimidate everyone. They described how former coworkers are directly confronting leadership to ensure their concerns are addressed and won’t be ignored. The employee believes this is a clear and aggressive attempt to prevent unionization, and emphasized that Rockstar relies on the skills and dedication of all its talented game developers to create successful games.

Rockstar Games anticipates that the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 will be the most successful video game release ever. However, the game’s release has been delayed until November 19, 2026, for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This delay is projected to cost Rockstar around $60 million.
