Over 100 self-driving cars leave passengers stranded in China after sudden outage

More than 100 driverless taxis suddenly stopped working simultaneously in Wuhan, China, surprising passengers and leaving them stuck.

On March 31, 2026, robotaxis owned by Chinese ride-hailing company ‘Apollo Go’ suddenly shut down.

The event happened around 9 PM that night. The Wuhan traffic police started receiving reports about it as early as 8:57 PM.

Okay, so I’ve been reading about what happened with those self-driving taxis, and it’s kinda scary. Apparently, some people were actually stuck inside – the doors wouldn’t open! Others were so freaked out when the cars just stopped in busy streets that they didn’t even try to get out. Can you imagine? I’d be hitting the panic button for sure!

People shared their experiences on social media, reporting issues with the service. One user said she was stuck on a highway overpass, surrounded by garbage trucks, after being unable to reach Apollo Go’s support team.

She explained that she tried contacting the robotaxi’s customer service multiple times, but initially couldn’t reach anyone. When she finally did get through, each representative simply told her they had sent the issue to a specialist for further attention.

She explained that her request for help was cancelled after 10:30 PM, leaving her stranded on the overpass with no assistance.

A major issue occurred with Apollo Go, China’s driverless taxi service that’s been operating since 2021 and can transport up to 250,000 passengers weekly. Yesterday, the system crashed in Wuhan, causing Baidu’s robotaxi fleet to suddenly stop functioning.

Luckily, nobody got hurt when the servers went down, but things got a little chaotic. I heard there were a bunch of players running into each other because of the sudden disconnect!

Wuhan robotaxi company addresses multi-car blackout

After a concerning incident with one of its vehicles, Apollo Go stated that a “system failure” may have been the cause.

The company stated in a press release that early investigation results point to a system failure as the reason for the disruption.

As a huge fan of the future of transportation, I’m really impressed with Apollo Go! They’re one of the biggest robotaxi services out there, not just in China but worldwide. I heard they’re already running around 500 vehicles as of this year, which is incredible!

So, self-driving cars are popping up everywhere, which is cool, but honestly, the tech still feels a little buggy. I was reading about a Waymo passenger who had to get out in January 2026 because the car got stuck on train tracks – seriously! And apparently, another Waymo just stopped dead in the middle of traffic back in November 2025. Makes you think twice about trusting it completely, you know?
