The eighth and final season of Outlander is coming soon, and Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant recently spoke with Caitriona Balfe about what happens after the shocking betrayal in the last season.
Outlander is a historical romance series spanning eight seasons. It begins with Claire Beauchamp (played by Caitriona Balfe) enjoying a post-World War II honeymoon in Scotland, but she’s suddenly thrown back in time to 1743. The show follows her journey through love, loss, and the conflict between two different eras. It’s based on the popular book series by Diana Gabaldon, first published in 1991.
Season 7 of Outlander shocked viewers when Claire had an affair with Lord John Grey, a close friend and father figure to Jamie. When Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) unexpectedly returned, he discovered those he loved had seemingly started new relationships. Fans felt similarly hurt, but the story soon shifted its focus to the American Revolutionary War.
In a recent interview with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant, Caitríona Balfe discussed the challenges Jamie and Claire face after the dramatic events of season 7. She specifically addressed how Claire’s night with Lord John Grey continues to affect their relationship.
I think Claire is like, ‘Come on!’ Right? Yeah, get over it. But I’m not against Jamie.
It’s understandable he needs a bit more time to get over things and is still a little sensitive. It’s actually pretty funny to watch him and Claire interact – she’s clearly annoyed he’s still dwelling on it, like ‘Seriously, are you still upset about this?’ But I can see his side too.
I believe Claire and Lord John’s actions, though not meant to hurt him, feel like a real betrayal to Jamie. He needs some time to process it, which is frustrating for Claire, but he absolutely does. He needs a moment to come to terms with everything.
Honestly, watching season 7 really highlighted how much of the intimacy between Jamie and Claire was focused on his needs. It was painful to see, especially knowing how John’s feelings for Jamie have been a long-standing source of hurt. Claire, being the more open-minded one, seems perfectly accepting of John’s sexuality, which is refreshing. But when Jamie found out about the affair, his reaction was explosive – he physically attacked John, leaving him with a bloody face. And now, giving Claire the cold shoulder after having his way with her? It’s no wonder she’s completely done with the whole situation. I’m totally on her side!
The season 7 finale brought John and Jamie back together, immediately reigniting the complicated dynamic between the three of them and hinting that old wounds haven’t fully healed. Meanwhile, Claire is haunted by the past and present, especially after receiving news about her daughter Faith, who died during childbirth, through a vivid and unsettling dream. Despite the pressure of meeting fan expectations, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts expressed satisfaction with the final season, admitting it was a challenging undertaking.
Though emotional storylines are still unfolding, the sweeping romantic drama continues its journey from the 1700s to the 1900s, with elements of time travel, lost love, and family connections. Season 8 will largely cover the ninth book, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, and the final season will bring the story to the American Revolution, introducing both returning characters and new dangers for Jamie and Claire’s life at Fraser’s Ridge.
Outlander returns to Starz on Friday, March 6, 2026.
