I remember how much fantasy really took off on TV in the 2010s, and I think Game of Thrones was a huge reason why. It felt like it followed on from the success of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings movies in the decade before. Game of Thrones proved that you could create a really well-made, complex fantasy show for adults. Then, around the same time, Starz came out with a series that had a fantastical twist – time travel! I’m actually getting back into it now because the final season just dropped, and it’s doing really well on Netflix.
Given the popularity of Diana Gabaldon’s books, it’s no shock that the series is getting a lot of buzz. However, it’s unusual for a show originally on Starz to also appear on Netflix, since most networks and streaming services want exclusive content. This might be why Outlander is now a top 10 trending show on Netflix worldwide – many people don’t subscribe to both platforms. Allowing Netflix to show the series could also benefit Starz, attracting new viewers and encouraging them to subscribe to Starz for the final season.

Like Game of Thrones, Outlander benefits from its network recognizing its success and wanting to build on that popularity while the show is at its peak.
‘Outlander’ Might Just Be Heating Up

The story of Outlander begins with Claire Randall (Caitríona Balfe) mysteriously traveling back in time from the 1940s to the 1740s. There, she encounters and falls in love with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Unlike many fantasy shows filled with dragons and magic, Outlander‘s central fantastical element is time travel, which shapes Claire and Jamie’s enduring love story as they navigate different eras and generations.
Following the success of prequels like House of the Dragon (expanding the world of Game of Thrones) and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the series Outlander has also explored its history with the spin-off Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Premiering in 2025, Blood of My Blood tells the love story of Jamie Fraser’s parents, and a second season is already planned. Outlander’s creator, Matthew B. Roberts, has hinted that other characters from the original series could also get their own spin-off shows.
Will the ‘Outlander’ Bubble Burst?
The trailer for the final season of Outlander clearly shows how excited people are to see the story end. While there’s a lot of expectation, it’s arguably less intense than what Game of Thrones faced, as Outlander didn’t become quite as much of a cultural phenomenon. However, because the show is based on a book series that started in 1991, there’s a dedicated fanbase eagerly awaiting a satisfying conclusion.

The disappointing reaction to the last season of Game of Thrones made people less enthusiastic about potential spin-off shows. So, if Outlander doesn’t finish its run successfully, viewers might lose interest in spin-offs altogether. While a second season of the first Outlander prequel is already confirmed, any further expansions depend heavily on how the main series concludes. We saw with Game of Thrones that even announced spin-offs can be canceled, and the same could happen to planned Outlander expansions.
Fans still have two months’ worth of Outlander to go before the show concludes on May 8.
