While the 2026 Oscars showcased a dazzling show, a picture taken after the ceremony revealed a messy scene inside the Dolby Theatre, leading to criticism online from viewers.
Okay, so the Oscars happened on Sunday, and it was a huge night for movies! Honestly, I was rooting for a few different films, but Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another totally dominated, winning six awards. It was awesome to see that film get so much recognition – definitely a big night for them!
Though Ryan Coogler’s film, Sinners, was a strong contender with four Oscar wins, attention has turned from the successful ceremony to a less flattering image that’s been shared online.
Matt Neglia, who runs the Next Best Picture website, posted a photo of the Dolby Theatre after an event. The picture showed a mess of empty bottles, food wrappers, and other trash all over the seats. He captioned it with a playful, “Clean up on aisle ALL.”
2026 Oscars photo sparks backlash over Dolby Theatre aftermath
The photo sparked online backlash, with some people calling out celebrities for what they saw as hypocrisy regarding the mess left at the Dolby Theatre. One commenter wrote, “It’s typical for wealthy people to leave others to clean up after them.”

Someone else complained, ‘They talk about protecting the mountains and keeping them clean, but look at the trash they’re making!’ It’s clear nobody believes them anymore. As the saying goes, you can tell a person’s true character by who their friends are – or, in this case, by the mess they leave behind.
Someone else joked it was “One Bottle After Another,” and another person pointed out that despite being dressed in expensive clothes, the group left the venue looking like a mess – like a movie theater after a big Marvel film release. This showed that being wealthy doesn’t guarantee good behavior.
The post also appeared on Reddit, where the author criticized the Oscars, saying that after the ceremony, immigrant workers are left to clean up the mess made by the ‘snobby hypocrites’ who attended.
But some people have come to the defense of those invited to the 2026 Oscars, with one person pointing out that the actors who attended may not be to blame.
They pointed out that this area seemed to be for general attendees, not the prime seats reserved for celebrities. They clarified it was where regular Academy members sit, not the actors themselves.

Someone criticized the Oscars organizers, saying the event, while glamorous, lacked basic cleanup provisions – there were no recycling or trash bins available after the show.
Having enough trash cans throughout the event space would have easily prevented messes. It’s often the small details that have the biggest impact on a successful event.
But another chimed in to say, “Japan has ZERO public trash cans and it never looks like this.”
Someone else pointed out that this is typical for most American movie theaters after a film, and they doubt anyone, regardless of wealth, would bother cleaning up after themselves.
Someone pointed out that it’s typical for event staff to clear trash from rows of seats after people leave, as many venues request guests leave their garbage at their seats for easy cleanup.
Everything looks okay. It’s not a major mess like spilled popcorn or whole chickens. It just seems like personal items – boxes and bottles – left on the seats by different people.
