Okay, so I just found out what games Guillermo del Toro – you know, the amazing director who’s won three Oscars – is really into! Apparently, he loves BioShock, Death Stranding, Red Dead Redemption, and God of War, to name a few. It’s cool to see what kind of games someone like him enjoys!
Guillermo del Toro recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he considers Sony’s God of War games to have some of the most impressive cinematic storytelling he’s ever seen.
He described the fight between Kratos and Odin in God of War Ragnarok as incredibly intense, noting Odin’s resilience and fighting style, which reminded him of a character from Peaky Blinders. He praised the game for its high quality and especially highlighted the impressive use of technology to create realistic lighting and atmospheric effects, comparing it to a cinematic experience.
The filmmaker stated that BioShock is the most immersive game he’s experienced, and also highlighted Death Stranding (a game he appears in) as a personal favorite. He believes Metal Gear Solid has the best game universe overall.
He also loves playing Left 4 Dead and expansive, open-world games such as Red Dead Redemption. He particularly praised Shadow of the Colossus, calling it a beautiful and heartbreaking masterpiece.
Guillermo del Toro once worked on a game called Insane with the studio behind Saints Row, Volition. He envisioned it as the first part of a three-game series, but the project was canceled by THQ. Although del Toro expressed interest in finding another way to release the game, it never came to fruition.
During The Game Awards in 2021, Guillermo del Toro playfully suggested a new Silent Hill game might be in the works. However, he later explained he was simply teasing Konami, the company that had previously cancelled his Silent Hills project, which included the playable teaser P.T.
After the cancellations of both Insane and Silent Hills, Guillermo del Toro stated he’d stopped attempting to create video games. He jokingly referred to himself as bad luck for the medium, saying he’d become its ‘albatross’ – a burden or something that causes persistent misfortune.
Look, I’ve made a decision: I’m done with video games. Seriously. It’s the only way to avoid ruining someone’s life – I always end up teaming with someone and then, somehow, their virtual house gets blown up, or something equally disastrous happens. So, for everyone’s sake, I’m out.
Guillermo del Toro is a filmmaker famous for his dark and imaginative movies like Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Nightmare Alley. He’s won multiple Academy Awards, including two for The Shape of Water and one for Pinocchio. His latest film, Frankenstein: The Anatomy Lesson, featuring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, is currently available on Netflix and in some cinemas.
