As a movie enthusiast, I had the pleasure of experiencing Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel’s gripping drama that made its debut at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival within the Un Certain Regard section. This extraordinary film was honored with the Caméra d’Or for best first feature. The captivating performances in this production are delivered by Renate Reinsve, who was also crowned best actress at Cannes for her role in “The Worst Person in the World,” and Ellen Dorrit Petersen.
The movie “Armand” revolves around the renowned actress Elisabeth, who receives an unexpected call for a parent-teacher meeting at her son’s school after hours. This encounter sets off a series of accusations among parents and teachers that unfold like a complex web. As Elisabeth navigates through the deserted classrooms and dimly lit hallways in search of the truth, a struggle for redemption ensues, filled with intense emotions such as desire, madness, and obsession, as described in the film’s production notes.
In an interview, Ullmann Tøndel notes that many scenes in the film deal with complex moral gray areas: truth versus lies, victims versus abusers, guilt versus innocence, play versus violence. He wonders if we’ve ever experienced such blurred lines between right and wrong, where conflicting ideas have been so closely intertwined?
The drama in the movie arises from an ambiguous incident involving Jon and Armand, which might seem harmless or quite significant depending on one’s perspective. According to the director, this film is not primarily about the dispute between these two boys, but rather it explores how adults shape our realities according to our identities and experiences, offering a different perspective from focusing on a simple conflict between two young individuals.
The movie was created by Andrea Berentsen Ottmar, under her production company Eye Eye Pictures. Berentsen Ottmar has previously worked on projects such as “The Worst Person in the World” and “I Hate Myself.
Kepler Film, One Two Films, Prolaps, and Film i Väst are the collaborative production studios. The individuals responsible for this collaboration are Koji Nelissen, Derk-Jan Warrink, Fred Burle, Sol Bondy, Alicia Hansen, Stina Eriksson, Kristina Börjeson, and Magnus Thomassen.
(In this version, I’ve used more natural phrasing to describe the companies and individuals involved in the collaboration.)
