Oscar Isaac unintentionally became a viral sensation after saying the line “Somehow, Palpatine returned” in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. He recently revealed that the line was actually added to the movie very late in the production process.
The newest Star Wars trilogy centers on Rey’s fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order, who now rule the galaxy after the fall of the original Empire. The first two films hinted at the mystery of Rey’s family, but the final movie quickly brought back a major villain from the past: Emperor Palpatine.
The story reveals Rey is Palpatine’s granddaughter, and the opening crawl confirms the villain’s return through cloning. As fans may recall, Darth Vader defeated Palpatine by dropping him into a shaft on the Death Star in Return of the Jedi.
Oscar Isaac, who played Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has revealed that the line which became a popular meme originated from some quick reshoots during the making of The Rise of Skywalker.

In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Isaac explained that the popular meme originated from additional filming done on the ninth Star Wars film. While it’s normal for big movies to reshoot scenes to add or refine parts of the film, Isaac suggested that The Rise of Skywalker underwent a significant number of changes during these reshoots.
Looking back, we definitely had to do some reshoots! Honestly, when I watch it now, I think my wig looks okay, but I’d already cut my hair and had to rush back in to fix it. It was like a quick, focused effort to get everything right. That whole addition at the end was new, and the whole process was just constantly changing and evolving – a lot of moving parts!
Isaac admitted he fully embraced the frustration surrounding the film. The final installment, The Rise of Skywalker, underwent significant revisions when J.J. Abrams replaced director Colin Trevorrow. Trevorrow’s initial story, called Duel of the Fates, didn’t feature Palpatine as the central antagonist.
The story centered on Rey’s efforts to overcome the First Order by defeating Kylo Ren. Meanwhile, characters like Finn, played by John Boyega, sparked a rebellion among stormtroopers on the planet Coruscant.
Fans will need to wait for the release of The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter to find out what happens next in the Star Wars universe. In the meantime, you can explore our list of the most anticipated movies of 2026 and see a full schedule of upcoming releases.
