Orphan 3: Official Title & Development Update Revealed

A year after announcing a sequel, Dark Castle Entertainment has shared a significant update about Orphan 3, including officially confirming the title. Lionsgate approved the movie in November 2024, and in May 2025, star Isabelle Fuhrman spoke positively about the script, written by David Coggeshall, though it was still in the early stages of development.

I’m so excited! DiscussingFilm just dropped a behind-the-scenes photo from Orphan 3, and it’s official – they’ve started filming! Apparently, the movie is now called Orphans, and Isabelle Fuhrman is coming back as Esther, which is amazing. We don’t know who else will be in it yet, but the writer, Coggeshall, and director, William Brent Bell, are both returning. Check out the first look below!

As a big fan of the Orphan films, I’m really excited about the upcoming movie! So far, we know that Jaume Collet-Serra, Julia Stiles, and Ross Bell, who were all involved with Orphan: First Kill, are returning. The actress playing Esther described it to Bloody Disgusting as an “inbetweenquel” – meaning the story will fill in gaps and take place at different points in time before and after the original movie. It sounds like a clever way to expand the story!

Released on August 19, 2022, both in some cinemas and on Paramount+, Orphan: First Kill arrived 13 years after the initial Orphan film. Critics generally liked the sequel, giving it a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also performed well financially, earning $45.6 million worldwide and proving popular enough to suggest another installment could be made.

The ending of Orphan: First Kill appears to connect directly to the beginning of the original Orphan, showing how Esther was eventually adopted by the Coleman family. However, if the film’s timeline is more complex – happening both before and after the first movie – it could significantly expand the franchise’s history and provide a deeper understanding of Esther’s origins.

The new movie might reveal more about Esther’s past at the orphanage and how it relates to her current actions. Considering the title, Orphans, it appears someone from her history will likely be connected to the murders this time.

As a huge fan of the Orphan films, I’m already buzzing about Orphan 3! Filming has just started, and it sounds like they’re really shaking things up – possibly in a big way. Honestly, the title alone hints at something really different, and I’m excited to see where they take Esther’s story. It feels like this sequel could be something truly special and unlike anything we’ve seen before.
