Original Sentry Star Addresses if They’ll Be in the MCU After Dropping Out of Thunderbolts*

Steven Yeun, previously chosen to play Sentry in the movie Thunderbolts, has talked about whether he’s still interested in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Marvel Studios film Thunderbolts came out in US cinemas last May. Jake Schreier directed the movie, which features Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes (also known as the Winter Soldier), Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

Before Pullman was chosen for the role, Yeun was originally considered for the part of Sentry. Yeun and Schreier had collaborated before on the Netflix series Beef, where Schreier directed multiple episodes of the first season.

Filming for Thunderbolts* was put on hold in 2023 because of the writers’ and actors’ strikes. As a result, Steven Yeun had to leave the project due to conflicts with the new filming schedule.

The actor explained to Variety that getting older and life changes helped him move on from the role. He’s confident Jake Gyllenhaal will be fantastic in the part, and he’s hoping to appear in a Marvel film himself.

What did Steven Yeun say about the MCU and Thunderbolts*?

In an interview with MovieWeb about Invincible Season 4, Steven Yeun was asked whether he’d seen the movie Thunderbolts and if he was still interested in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe sometime in the future.

Yes, I did,” he replied. “I really love Jake Schreier, he’s a fantastic director. I saw the film, and I’m open to working again in the future – I’m available.”

Steven Yeun recently played Detective Mike Ro in the Netflix series The Rip. He’s also lending his voice to a character in the animated movie The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, and will appear in Animals, a new crime thriller directed by Ben Affleck.

Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is available to stream on Disney+.
