OpenAI recently released an updated version of its AI video generator, Sora 2, and a new social video app with the same name, Sora. The app became available on iPhones in the US and Canada on September 30.
This exclusive platform functions much like TikTok, featuring a continuously scrolling video feed. Rather than creating content through duets or stitches, users make brief videos that others can then reimagine as new, AI-powered videos – but only with the original creator’s permission. Each invitation not only grants access to the app but also provides four extra invites to share with friends.
Currently, the app creates clips that are a maximum of 10 seconds long. It also only allows the use of a person’s likeness if they have uploaded a Cameo and given their consent.
Sora 2 and cameo features
The app’s “cameo” feature is now driven by the improved Sora 2 model, letting users feature in AI-created remixes of their videos. The person who originally made the video is considered a co-owner of any remix created and has the power to remove it or cancel access whenever they want.
There are some limitations in place. For example, the system won’t create images of public figures unless those figures have personally uploaded content for use in cameos. OpenAI also states that it’s not possible to create adult or extremely graphic content using the platform. Currently, there’s no announcement regarding an Android version of the app.
OpenAI initially unveiled its Sora video model in late 2024, showcasing its capability to generate brief, lifelike video clips based on text descriptions. The initial release was restricted to research and preview purposes. Today’s announcement signifies the first instance of this technology being incorporated into a social platform accessible to the general public.
