NetEase’s new open-world RPG, Where Winds Meet, had a hugely successful launch, drawing in over 2 million players on its first day. On Steam alone, 190,000 people were playing at the same time. Because the game is also available on PS5, the total number of players is likely even higher than reported.
Games created in China, especially those inspired by Chinese history and mythology, are gaining more and more fans in Western countries. Last year, Black Myth: Wukong was a huge hit, and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers stood out by blending challenging gameplay with elements of ancient Chinese folklore.
Where Winds Meet has received nearly 9,000 reviews on Steam, with a largely positive reception. Players consistently highlight its beautiful open world, which feels comparable to a paid game, not a free-to-play one. Many also enjoy the engaging story in the single-player mode and appreciate the game’s depth, though some find it a bit complex to learn at first.
A unique aspect of Where Winds Meet – its AI-powered NPCs – isn’t resonating with all players. Some have described the interactions with these NPCs as unsettling, and at least one player stopped playing because of them. While the game clearly identifies which characters are AI, many find that this breaks their sense of immersion.
Where Winds Meet is impressive so far, but only time will tell if it has longevity.
