Only Murders in the Building Season 5, Episode 5, titled “Tongue Tied,” shared details about Oliver Putnam’s past. John Hoffman, who co-created the series, recently discussed why this information is so important.
In an interview with TV Line, Hoffman discussed how the recent reveal that Oliver (Martin Short) spent his childhood in foster care in Flatbush adds depth to both the latest episode and his overall character. Hoffman remembered, “We had considered this for a while. I really liked the idea of showing that his outgoing, charismatic personality – the ‘Bon Vivant,’ as it were – wasn’t just natural, but developed as a way to cope with a difficult upbringing. That contrast was fascinating to me.”
I grew up in Brooklyn – and since I knew Lester and his wife Lorraine lived in Flatbush, and I was familiar with the area, I started to think there might be a connection between Oliver and Lester, as Hoffman explained. He also pointed out that Oliver’s background in the foster care system was crucial for giving the audience a sense of “what Oliver’s time in Flatbush was like” and adding a surprising depth to his character.
, Only Murders in the Building first aired in 2021 and quickly became popular with viewers who were eager for a fresh, lighthearted murder mystery. The series features Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage, a former action star, and Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora, a young artist. Together with Oliver Putnam, played by Short, they all reside in the large Arconia apartment building.
When a murder occurs in their building, the three are brought together and begin a new journey. They become not only amateur detectives, but also a unique type of true crime podcasters – deeply connected to the stories they cover, more so than anyone else in the field. Each season of the show has included many notable guest stars, including Paul Rudd and others.
