Only 1 Targaryen Character Will Appear In GOT, HOTD & A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms

Please be aware that this article contains slight spoilers for “The Mystery Knight,” the third story in the Dunk and Egg series!

Despite the large Targaryen family, only one character will appear in both the original Game of Thrones series and its prequels, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Since Game of Thrones first aired in 2011, the fantasy franchise has become hugely popular, with two spin-off shows currently available and several more in the works.

The first Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, told more of the story of House Targaryen. But the second prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, takes a different approach. Instead of focusing on kings and queens, it tells the stories of ordinary people in Westeros.

The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms features a largely new set of characters with only loose ties to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Throughout the series, only one character, Brynden Rivers, will appear in all three shows, connecting their stories.

Brynden Rivers/The Three-Eyed Raven Will Be A Character In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms After GOT & HOTD Appearances

In the show Game of Thrones, the Three-Eyed Raven initially appears as a raven in Bran Stark and Osha’s dreams. This mystical figure is ancient, having existed for over a thousand years and passing on their knowledge to different people over time. We eventually meet the character in human form in season 4, where they begin to teach Bran Stark how to become the next Three-Eyed Raven.

For a long time, fans guessed that the Three-Eyed Raven from Game of Thrones was actually Brynden Rivers. This idea wasn’t officially confirmed until season 2 of House of the Dragon, when Daemon Targaryen had a vision. In that vision, he saw a character with Brynden’s unique birthmark and build becoming one with the Weirwood tree.

Considering everything we now know, Brynden Rivers—one of King Aegon IV Targaryen’s illegitimate sons—was likely the most powerful and important of them all. He wasn’t just significant as the Three-Eyed Raven; before that, he played a crucial role in shaping the history of Westeros.

Bloodraven played a key role in both Blackfyre Rebellions, earning him the position of Hand of the King thanks to his unwavering loyalty and skill as a strategist. During the Second Blackfyre Rebellion, he encounters Dunk and Egg, setting the stage for his appearance in the story ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.

The third book in the Dunk and Egg series, The Mystery Knight, features the Second Blackfyre Rebellion. Since each season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will cover roughly one of these novellas, Bloodraven is likely to appear in future seasons if the show is renewed for seasons two and three.

Why Brynden Rivers’ A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Appearance Is So Much More Important Than GOT & HOTD

Okay, let’s talk about Brynden Rivers – or Bloodraven, as many fans know him. He is in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, but honestly, you could blink and miss him! There’s a huge air of mystery around this character, and the frustrating thing is, we only see him in a handful of episodes – three in the original series and just one in the prequel. And to make it even more interesting, the scenes we do get show him long after he’s already spent years as the Three-Eyed Raven. It’s a tease, really, leaving you wanting so much more.

We haven’t learned much about Bloodraven’s life before he became the Three-Eyed Raven, only that he was a powerful figure in Westeros, effectively ruling at times, as detailed in George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones books. The upcoming book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will finally let us witness his skills as a strategist and his impact on Westerosi politics firsthand.

Furthermore, seeing him in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will finally reveal his character, beyond just his place in history. Becoming the Three-Eyed Raven fundamentally changed Bran, and it’s likely Bloodraven had a distinct personality and demeanor before his time at the Wall – one different from what we saw in the original Game of Thrones.
