One Tree Hill’s James Lafferty & Chad Michael Murray Cast Doubt on Return to Upcoming Reboot

With so many popular shows being revived these days, there’s been discussion about bringing back . This beloved drama originally ran from 2003 to 2012, spanning nine seasons, though the final two seasons saw some significant changes.

Both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and One Tree Hill share more than just recent reboot attempts – they also both had showrunners facing serious misconduct allegations. Buffy’s creator, Joss Whedon, has been accused of workplace harassment, while One Tree Hill’s creator, Mark Schwahn, faced accusations of sexual harassment, prompting a letter of support for the accusers from cast and crew, including stars Hilarie Burton and Danneel Harris Ackles. A reboot was announced in summer 2024, but details have been scarce. In a recent interview with People magazine, stars Chad Michael Murray and James Lafferty hinted they may not reprise their roles as Lucas and Nathan Scott.

The actors who played brothers on the show, and who became close friends themselves during filming, don’t think the series could work today. When asked if they’d ever reprise their roles after the show ended in 2012, one of the actors explained they played those characters for nine years and felt the story had already reached its natural conclusion. He added that he didn’t believe audiences would be interested in seeing their characters dealing with modern issues like social media.

Chad Michael Murray departed One Tree Hill after its sixth season due to disagreements over his contract. He has said he doesn’t think the show could recapture its magic now, explaining that its success stemmed from realistically portraying the challenges faced by teenagers. The series followed the lives of Lucas, Nathan, Peyton, Haley, and Brooke throughout high school, then jumped forward in time to follow them as young adults. Murray believes the show was a unique and special phenomenon, and he’s thankful to have been a part of it.
