Beware! Major spoilers ahead for the final episode of Stranger Things. If you haven’t finished the series on Netflix, this article will reveal key plot points, so proceed with caution!
It’s been a week since the latest episode of Stranger Things aired, though many fans aren’t convinced it was the final episode. People are still debating how things ended, or rather, how unresolved some storylines were. A lot of discussion centers around Eleven, played by Millie Bobby Brown – did she truly sacrifice herself, or was Mike’s more optimistic ending the real one?
Look, I really want to believe Eleven is happily living a normal life, maybe enjoying some peace and quiet after everything she went through. But I honestly don’t think Mike’s theory about what happened holds up. It just doesn’t seem like Kali, especially in the state she was in, could have pulled off what he suggests – unless she was faking how bad things were to trick Hopper, which is a thought, but that gets complicated. Plus, I feel like they simply ran out of time for everything to happen the way Mike thinks it did.
Beyond the details of the plot itself, the finale hinted Eleven might not have survived, and this was signaled by the unexpected return of Ted Wheeler.

Ted Wheeler’s Fate Went Unconfirmed For More Than Half Of Season 5
Do you remember in Season 2 when Ted Wheeler tried to fight a Demogorgon with a golf club? It didn’t go well – he was seriously injured and appeared to be near death. This idea was made even stronger by the fact that the show seemed to forget about him for the next five episodes, focusing instead on the rest of his family. While people didn’t openly mourn him, the fast pace of the show meant it could have taken a long time for anyone to even notice he was gone.

That might be an exaggeration, but with Mike busy helping Will, Joyce, and others fight the bigger battle, and Holly trying to get away from danger, plus Karen recovering in the hospital, Ted understandably wasn’t a priority for anyone. People wondered where he was, but he wasn’t essential to defeating the Mind Flayer.
Honestly, I thought they were going to kill off Ted – it would’ve been an easy way to raise the stakes without losing a core character. But then, boom, there he was in that flash-forward at the Hawkins High graduation! At first, I was totally shocked to see him alive, but then it hit me: maybe Ted’s survival is directly tied to Eleven’s story, specifically how Mike is feeling. It’s like they mirror each other emotionally, you know?

I Think Ted Survived So That Mike’s Grief Wasn’t TOO Overwhelming
The simple reason Ted lived is that his injuries weren’t deadly. However, creatively speaking, it’s likely the writers kept him alive to avoid putting Mike through too much grief. Showing him mourn both his first love and a close family member would have been incredibly difficult for audiences to watch, and the story might have become too depressing.
Seeing that Ted is doing well suggests his sadness was really about Eleven. This explains his positive attitude – if he’d been overwhelmed with grief at graduation, his ideas about Dungeons & Dragons might have seemed more like a desperate attempt to cope than a hopeful vision.
I truly believe Eleven is gone for good, because Mike can’t realistically have things both ways. Even if the situation isn’t solely about Mike, and more about Eleven and Ted, we’re still seeing everything through Finn Wolfhard’s character’s eyes, so it’s all about how he perceives it. If either Ted or Eleven didn’t suffer consequences from Vecna, Mike wouldn’t have grown as a person – though it’s tough to admit. This tragedy will likely help him become a better writer, though.
Despite everything, if the show had killed off Ted from his injuries, I think I would have been more convinced that Eleven survived even after the Upside Down was destroyed. While seeing Mike completely devastated would have been sad, that storyline still doesn’t feel like the best option.
It’s good that Mike is still hoping for the best, but I’m relieved it doesn’t seem like he’s going to launch a massive search for her. Because let’s be real, she’s gone. She’s definitely not coming back.
