One Piece star Emily Rudd insisted on wearing Nami’s miniskirt despite freezing weather “for the fans”

Emily Rudd, the actress who plays Nami in the live-action Netflix series One Piece, requested to wear her character’s signature short skirt even while filming in cold winter conditions for the show’s second season.

Costume designer Kerry Anne Barnard told InStyle that the team had to find a way to make Oda’s character designs work on set, considering the difficulties of actually filming the show.

When creating Nami’s Reverse Mountain outfit, we faced a challenge because of its distinctive cropped vest and short skirt.

Emily Rudd kept signature Nami look despite winter filming

The character wears a vest in the original manga, but we added long sleeves to Emily’s costume for the live-action adaptation. It was winter during filming, and we wanted to make sure she stayed warm while performing all the action scenes, as explained by Barnard.

The film crew made some adjustments to Paul Rudd’s costume to keep him warm while shooting, but Nami’s iconic skirt stayed exactly the same.

Barnard explained that Rudd decided to stick with the original design, even with the cold weather, because staying true to the manga was very important to her.

She was already performing in a very short skirt and knew it would be cold. But, as she told me, she prioritized giving her fans the best possible performance. She was incredibly tough about it, because it really was cold out there.

Nami, the navigator for the Straw Hat Pirates, is a very popular character in the One Piece series. She’s known for wearing a lot of different outfits throughout the manga and anime, but she often sports short skirts and cropped tops as part of her look.

Fans are loving the second season of One Piece! The live-action series currently has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
