The season finale included a surprising discovery about a key character, and they will be the main focus of Season 3.
Okay, so this episode didn’t just focus on the current stuff – it also hinted at a really sad past for another character. It feels like they’re building up something big and tragic that’s going to come back and hit us hard later on in the series. Just a heads up – if you haven’t seen it yet, SPOILERS are coming!
One Piece Season 2 confirms Sanji’s princely past
We first meet Sanji in One Piece Season 1 as a young boy working on a ship. He ends up stranded on a small island with limited food, and only Chef Zeff for company. However, the manga and anime reveal more of his backstory, with hints appearing twice in Season 2.
The first instance of this happens when Sanji is talking on the phone with Mr. 0, and he pretends to be someone else by introducing himself as “Mr. Prince.”
The second instance of this happens when Nami gets sick, and Sanji reveals the origins of his passion for cooking. He explains that when he was a child, his mother was very ill, and he wanted to help her feel better. Cooking became his way of showing her his love and care.
Sanji’s mother would always greet him with a royal-like question when he brought her food, asking what he’d brought for her that day. This happens twice in Season 2, and it’s a faithful adaptation of the original story, where Sanji is actually a prince.
Sanji’s royal pedigree explained
Both the manga and anime series reveal that Sanji was born into the Vinsmoke family, a powerful ruling family of the Germa Kingdom.
Sanji’s father, Vinsmoke Judge, experimented on his sons to create super-soldiers. However, Sanji’s mother, Cora, secretly took a medication during her pregnancy to protect her children from this experimentation, and it successfully blocked Sanji’s powers from developing.
Cora suffered side effects from the medication she was taking, which made her sick. Young Sanji learned to cook hoping to make her happy, but sadly, she passed away. This gave Sanji a difficult beginning in life, despite being born into a noble family.
This explains why Sanji loves to show his care for people through cooking, and why he gets so worried when Nami gets sick. We can likely expect to learn more about the Vinsmoke family and the Gera Kingdom in future episodes.
