In a recent statement, well-known One Piece anime director Megumi Ishitani voiced her concern and advocated for appropriate measures in response to the increasing trend of using Studio Ghibli’s AI-generated artwork, which she believes infringes on the intellectual property rights of the studio’s legendary creator Hayao Miyazaki. She has urged for legal action against this unauthorized use.
The popularity of Studio Ghibli-style AI art, created using ChatGPT’s AI image generator, is still going strong, even among celebrities and political figures. This viral trend has become so widespread that OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has advised users to be mindful when creating these images due to its immense popularity.
Despite Hayao Miyazaki, the renowned animator and Studio Ghibli’s recognized figure, remaining silent on the matter, there’s been no shortage of opinions expressed in his defense. One such vocal critic of the AI version of Studio Ghibli is Megumi Ishitani, a distinguished director from the One Piece anime series.
One Piece anime director slams Studio Ghibli AI artÂ
On April 2nd, Megumi Ishitani expressed her dismay and exasperation about the abundance of AI-generated Studio Ghibli art online on a certain platform. She questioned if any Japanese were using Ghibli AI, stating that she was overwhelmed with despair, as this act could potentially devalue the Studio Ghibli brand.
Is it possible that they did this without permission? I find it hard to believe that Studio Ghibli would give their blessing for such a thing… Why is it allowed?”
3. Megumi followed up her original tweet with another one, voicing her displeasure and seeking resolution: “I simply cannot stand by as Studio Ghibli is treated so shabbily. I’m taking action! It’s unacceptable to copy Miyazaki’s artistic style without permission… Is this legal? I doubt it!”
4. Megumi expressed her outrage and called for action in a follow-up tweet: “Enough is enough! Studio Ghibli deserves better than this mistreatment. I can’t believe they would allow someone to imitate Miyazaki’s art style without permission! This needs to stop!”
“I can’t bear to see Studio Ghibli being treated this way. I demand action! It’s wrong to use Miyazaki’s art style without permission… Is that even legal?

The director of the One Piece anime, Megumi, became frustrated with a recent trend, given that she personally understands the immense amount of time and dedication required to produce animated series. Notably, Megumi has been lauded for her work on episode 1015, which boasts an impressive 9.7 rating on IMDb, making it one of the highest-rated episodes in the entire One Piece series.
Besides Megumi, there’s been vocal dissatisfaction with AI art, and Hayao Miyazaki expressed his disapproval quite emphatically in a 2016 broadcast. He declared he would never want to use such technology in his work, stating that it feels like an affront to life itself.
